Community reflects on storm losses as Morris Branstetter recalls watching hail depth with a jovial shrug. Kids marked June 14 1955 by tossing snowballs at the scene while others chase magazine photo rewards for Bob Ratcliff’s house move.
Carroll county youth from junior high and high school ages are invited to attend a Christian conference at the Delphi Presbyterian church Friday evening June 16 and Saturday June 17. Planning and organizing members include Dean Todd general chairman Phyllis Flora secretary Rev Drummond George Peterson Keith Faotose and Ethel Pearson all from Delphi and Flora areas.
Miss Margaret Coomey is visiting her brother Ed Coomey and his family in Fort Wayne Indiana during a short stay with relatives.
Carroll County offices in the Carroll County Court House at Delphi Indiana will close at 1.12 noon every Wednesday and will not handle business during Wednesday afternoon hours. Announcement from Carroll County Commissioners dated June 22.
William H. Bradshaw of Delphi has a Sept 2 reporting date at Lackland Air Force Base San Antonio Texas announced by DePauw University AFROTC. He earned a bachelor of arts degree June 6 and a reserve Air Force commission June 5 after completing AFROTC and will begin six weeks of indoctrination at Lackland.
Heart attack proves fatal to 10 contractor Frank W. Lamb 75 in Delphi. Funeral rites were held Saturday at Eikenberry with burial in Battle Ground Cemetery. Also noted was the arrival of Dr. Thomas Neal Petry who will assume Dr Wagoner's practice in Delphi this month before Army duty. Petry, from Indianapolis, is a 1954 Indiana University MD and former Air Force member, planning July 1 move and July 2 start of office. Petry will reside in the house vacated by Dr. Wagoner and family in South Delphi. He and his wife Beverly Ann and baby son Thomas Nelson will relocate from Indianapolis after internship at Indianapolis General Hospital. Dr. Wagoner, from Colburn, will depart for Houston for special training and possible Army tour. he expects to be in Delphi until then. He is an Indiana University alumnus, Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Chi, with chemistry BA 1950 and MD 1954.
Sixty community youngsters reported to city recreational director Tony Berto for the summer play programs. Age groups 9-12 and 13-14 will form ball teams to compete with neighboring towns. The West Central league game Camden vs Delphi on June 16 was postponed. Next week Rossville at Delphi. Camden at Delphi on June 22. Delphi at Lafayette on June 23. The first swimming party will be held at Lafayette next Wednesday.
Miss Joan Stoner presented 99 dance students in a Delphi high school auditorium recital over three nights. Sponsored by the Delphi PTA, with Mrs. Robert Million of Yeoman as accompanist, the show featured colorful lighting and was well received as Stoner closes summer studies before autumn sessions.
City council awarded the street department truck contract to Paul Johnson Ford. They discussed widening Wabash Street by 10 feet and approved installing a new pump at the well on the Country Club grounds to test it. The council also agreed to cooperate with the school board on Riley Park improvements.
George Grant was taken to the Indiana State Farm on Tuesday by Sheriff Carey and Chief Jack Dempsey after violating a suspended sentence from City Court. He will serve 90 days. Grant was caught last week in Thorntown by State Police for stealing hub caps from several cars and was originally arrested for tire and battery theft.
Mr and Mrs Joe Coomey with son Bill and daughter Joan will leave Saturday for a two week vacation to Mackinac Island and other points in Michigan and Wisconsin.
Dean Overholser son of Mr and Mrs Carl Overholser of Carrollton township arrives to join George Obear in the Obear law office. He earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Indiana University and will assist the Building and Loan Association secretary in June. He was a Law Review staffer, is a veteran, married with one child.
Miss Joyce Sollars niece of Mrs. Charles N. Kerlin of Delphi and Delphi high school graduate class of 1955 has been awarded the Lafayette 40 et 8 nurses scholarship. The award covers four years of nursing training at St. Luke's hospital Chicago. Sollars will train there after a summer job as Globe Valve receptionist in Delphi and has lived with the Kerling family for years.
Miss Barbara L. Duncan, 17, of Butler Pennsylvania, was found at the junction of highways 18 and 29 after fleeing her home earlier in the month. She had been staying in Louisville Kentucky and was taken to the County Home awaiting her parents who planned to pick her up Wednesday.
County auditor Ada Roach completed distribution of spring tax funds totaling 649833.46. Over 100000 was advanced. detailed allocations list townships corporations and state funds, including Delphi Clay Rock Creek Madison Jefferson and Washington townships and Camden and Delphi corporations.
Four people were reported injured in a two car accident Monday morning two miles east of Cutler on the Cutler Burlington road. Viola E Bolinger 24 Kokomo and Vernon Hausenfluck 42 route 2 Cutler drove the autos. Bolinger suffered a broken right arm Hausenfluck a broken left arm and Bolinger’s two young sons had minor cuts and bruises. Damage to the autos exceeded 1500 dollars. Hausenfluck was cited for driving left of center.
Thirteen boys entered the Logansport Soapbox Derby to be held Wednesday July 13. Delph i children include Billy Henderson Jerry Daniels Garrett Kurtz Randle McMurray Bobby Myers Ed Hayden and Paul Vernon Haffley. Flora entrants are Richard and Stanley Evans Steve Boller Herman and Myron Neff. Local co sponsors Mann Chevrolet Flora and Clawson Chevrolet Sales Delph i sponsors fund the entries.
Carroll County Farm Bureau announces its annual June meeting at the REMC auditorium Friday June 17 at 8 00 p m. Special music by Carroll County Home Demonstration chorus and devotions by Mrs John Witter precede a talk by Paul T Norris head of the membership organization department of Indiana Farm Bureau Inc Refreshments will follow the session.
Charles Kerling and Pete Har graves returned Sunday after a weeklong trip to Tower Minnesota accompanying the party.
A severe hailstorm swept south of Delphi on Tuesday afternoon damaging hundreds of acres of crops. Farmers reported heavy losses across Deer Creek and Madison townships, with John Gingrich and Wayne Clawson among the hardest hit. Rain accompanied the hail, flash floods closed roads, and insurance payouts are unlikely to cover total losses.

Dick Bowen aged 82 resided alone on Rinehart street Delphi when flames gutted his home Saturday night. He was found outside in a dazed condition and taken to St Elizabeth hospital. Firemen suspect Bowen started the blaze and an explosion occurred after he poured coal oil on kindling. Neighbors reported the fire about 10 p.m. Bowen’s hair was singed and his face heavily burned as the interior was destroyed.
The Carroll County Home Demonstration chorus directed by Mrs. Daniel Brown of Flora will sing at Purdue Hall of Music during the Purdue Agriculture conference. Accompanist is Mrs. Mark Carter. performance at 9 20 a m with a state 4 H chorus program and a 7 30 p m combined chorus directed by Al Stewart to be broadcast on WBAA.
Orton Zook resigns from the Carroll County Farm Bureau Co op to own and run the Standard Oil Station at the south entrance to Delphi on highway 421. He took over Monday from Paul Daniels and Charles Hildebrandt who had managed since construction. Hildebrandt and Daniels rent the Robert Bradshaw building at Market and Franklin streets for an alignment shop after remodeling.
Mrs Joe Fowler and her two children from west of Delphi are on a vacation trip to Florida after flying from Chicago.
The Indiana Heart Foundation plans to form a Carroll County Heart Committee as it expands education and community service. Marvin H. Miller of Indianapolis said growth includes more than research, with a call for public involvement and outreach in Delphi. The Federation of Women meets June 27 at 7 30 p m in the REMC auditorium to hear him, inviting the public.
Grover Link former trustee of Carrollton township lies seriously ill at Caylor and Nickel Bluffton clinic in Bluffton. His wife Mrs Willard Hicks and daughter are at his bedside.
Dick Lucas, former Pittsburg high school principal, departed Wednesday for Texas to begin duty with the U S Air Force. He and wife and their daughter have been residing in the Campbell apartment in South Delphi.
Mr and Mrs John S Bowman and Mr and Mrs Donald Welker with daughter Donna are spending two weeks fishing in Tower Minnesota.
Delphi Rainbow Assembly for Girls will honor their fathers with an 8 a m breakfast in the Masonic Temple, followed by a group attendance at the Methodist church. Event planners include Sandra Jones Carol Hawn Pat Myers and others. attendees must notify Kay Clawson or Virginia Peterson by Friday.
Charles Coghill announced a new taxi service in Delphi this week. The service resumes after the death of Earl Wagoner several weeks ago. Coghill can be reached at 764 until 10 p m with after hours dialing directed to the telephone operator.
Floyd C. Vaughan, who has been spending a month here with his family, will depart next week for Detroit where he will be stationed at Fort Wayne.
