County officials in Patton consider remodeling the old jail rather than funding a new building as engineers’ cost estimates diverge. They plan to consult contractors and may seek additional funds in next year’s budget pending auditor approval.
The 97th Old Settlers and Carnival moves to a new annex at Riley Park in Delphi with Baker's United Shows providing rides. The event runs Monday to Saturday, with concessions from local firms. Centennial teaching certificates and transportation details announced. park improvements include lighting, water, toilets, bleachers, and DDT spraying for pest control.
Delphi new football coach Tony Berto issued the first call for this year's squad. An organization meeting is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday August 8 in the High School Assembly to outline his system and expectations. Leroy J. Weaver 31 of Lafayette died at St. Elizabeth hospital Lafayette after an auto crash on State Road 25 near Lafayette. He collided head on with William L. Haines of Logansport Monday afternoon. Survivors include his parents Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Weaver and two sisters. Funeral rites set for Friday at St. Boniface Church at 9 a.m. Burial in church cemetery.

Mr and Mrs Don Draper of Delphi announce the birth of their daughter Ruthanne born July 25 at St Elizabeth hospital Lafayette.

Robert Stultz and John Bailey co owners of Delphi Lumber announce sale to Midland Building Industries Inc of Indianapolis. Transaction closed last week and new owners take possession. Stultz and Bailey advertise dissolution of partnership this week. Charles Battrum of Indianapolis is field rep for new owners. Paul Ashba remains manager and Mrs. Virginia Shoup stays as bookkeeper.
Mr and Mrs Roland Wilson report their son Jim was injured off the Korean coast during a skirmish. He and six other men suffered slight shrapnel wounds when they failed to reach battle stations in time. A fragment pierced his arm but he returned to duty the same day.
County Clerk Joe Tolen issues licenses during the week for Norman C. Yocom 17 of Delphi to Enid H. Newburn 17 of Delphi and Thomas E. Hedrick 18 of Crawfordsville to Nancy Jane Rubens 17 of Crawfordsville.
Jefferson Township proceeds with Yeoman school remodeling and enlargement. Trustee Ed Hoehne advertises a petition to issue bonds totaling 160000 for the project. Bonds split 97000 against the school township and 63000 against the civil township. Interest not to exceed 4 percent. Net assessed value 5084355. No outstanding indebtedness reported.
Miss Mary McCarty of Delphi will represent the city as Miss Delphi in the Miss Indiana contest in Lafayette. Eight contestants vie for the title with a parade and key presentation by Lafayette officials. Judges include Lt Gov John A Watkins and Purdue assistant dean Cecilia Zissis. The winner earns an all expenses paid trip to Atlantic City, a college scholarship, and a wardrobe.
Two year old Michael Hardin was struck by a tank truck owned by Smith Construction Company while crossing a street near his Galveston home. Driver Fred Phebus said he saw only the top of the child's head before impact. The 29 000 pound vehicle ran over the boy, crushing his skull and breaking both legs. He died instantly. Surviving are two sisters.
The Rossville High School Class of 1945 holds its third annual reunion on Sunday August 3 at 1 p m at the Rossville Gun Club located about one mile south and a quarter mile west of Rossville on State Road 39. Members should bring a covered dish and table service with a goal of full attendance.
Bill Perigo, Delphi high school alum and Western Michigan College former head coach, was appointed head basketball coach at the University of Michigan by Athletic Director Fritz Crisler. He will coach full time with Matt Patanelli as assistant, bringing a record of success from Benton Harbor and WMU to Ann Arbor. Born in Lebanon, he is married with three children.
Mrs. Hattie C. Ayres, 101, longtime Bringhurst resident and county's oldest citizen, died Tuesday at Kennedy Nursing Home Flora after a fall. Born December 22, 1850 near Cutler, she was survived by two sons Forrest and Arthur, a daughter Emma Holman, six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren, plus a sister in Oregon. Funeral from Bringhurst Methodist Church Thursday at 2 p.m. with Rev. A. A. Schenck officiating. burial in Asbury Cemetery. Carter Funeral Homes in charge.
Leslie Ray has been appointed coach and athletic director of Flora schools by county superintendent J. C. Yunker. He replaces Phil Buck, who resigns to coach freshman basketball at Indiana University. Ray, Ball State graduate, brings four years of coaching experience from North Vernon Ridgeville and Center Township.
Thomas Flowers of Lafayette, charged in Carroll circuit court with reckless homicide, was re admitted to Memorial hospital Logansport two hours after release to Carroll county authorities. The driver in a fatal Burrows crash that killed three persons has been hospitalized since the accident with a broken leg and returned to hospital to have the leg re broken and re set.
Parents of a son born Monday at Home hospital Lafayette announce Lt William Knoll stationed with the army in Germany and his wife Mary Alice McCain with her parents in Brookston. The couple's Delphi and Burlington teaching backgrounds are noted.
County commissioners faced soaring building costs after only one bid for the new jail came in at 59 000, fourteen thousand over the latest estimates. The bid from Sullivan Construction of Camden prompted a review by the council and commissioners, who debated funding and whether to seek explanation from the architect while planning further meetings.

The Delphis High School graduating class of 1933 plans its annual reunion on August 1 at Riley Park in Delphia. A basket dinner will be served at noon. All class members and their families are urged to attend.

Ritchie M. Goyer two year old son of Mr and Mrs Paul Goyer of Delphi escaped serious injury after pulling an electric coffee pot onto himself at his grandparents home in Logansport. He suffered second and third degree burns to his back and hips when the cord was grabbed as he started to fall from the high chair. He was treated at St Joseph hospital and released home Saturday.
Norm Eprite, who has led the arts and crafts class as part of the city recreation program, announced the class will close Friday August 8. He will be out of the city Wednesday and Thursday next week and no class will be held those two days. Those who ordered models should call at the school building this week.
Judging of 4-H exhibits in Fiora d number Harold Berry and Mrs. J Lowther reported a record volume. Winners include Roselyn Penn in Baking and Barbara Johnson in Preservation. County and township placements list numerous names across Adams Burlington Carrollton and Carrollton categories in clothing baking food preparation and handicraft with Phyllis Cox earning multiple honors.
