Public curiosity grows as a town observes a 1941 blackout trial with a potential August 4 publicity visit by a press representative. Residents volunteer as blackout experts while local events like Bringhurst festival and Delphi Rotary programs highlight community morale.

Bloomington Indiana July 24 Five Carroll county students are enrolled in the Indiana University summer session this year. The session closes August 6. County enrollments list Monroe first with 176 Marion 118 Lake 63 Allen 56 Lawrence 50. Carroll attendees include Bringhurst Golden Rule Cutler Lewis Gwin Otis Green Joseph McKinley Flora Lester Williams.
A new ten thousand dollar Standard Oil service station is under construction at the corner of Union and Main in Delphi replacing the former station. Six workmen will be employed for six weeks under manager Clark Ginn. Mr and Mrs Harold Anderson of Flint Michigan announce the birth of their daughter Janice Lynn on July 18.
Carroll County Selective Service notices a call for 20 men on August 12. Recruits must report to Fort Harrison for induction and depart from Delphi courthouse by 7 30 a m in central standard time via special bus. This is the thirteenth and largest call so far with ten men already sent last Friday to Fort Harrison.
Funeral services were held at United Brethren church in Ockley for Ernest B. Snyder 46 of Madison township born October 10 1894 a World War veteran and explosives supervisor. He was killed while blasting for a gasoline pipeline near Mulberry when a dynamite stick was tapped into a pipe. Two other workers Omer Myers and J W Overton were injured. The Sheehan Construction Co of Lafayette employed the men. Burial followed at Colburn cemetery.
The county wide aluminum collection drive in Delphi and Carroll County peaks as door to door pickups by a Boy Scout troop fill the courthouse bin. Drives span Liberty, Rock Creek, Washington, Monroe, Adams, Burlington and Dee Creek townships under county agent Ralph Maggart with pledges to ship the aluminum to a designated concentration point. An inter county contest offers a framed scroll signed by Roosevelt Schricker Knudsen LaGuardia and defense officials.
The Delphi Old Settlers celebration announced by Paul Johnson of the Chamber of Commerce will be on Saturday August 9 at the courthouse square. Band concerts are planned in the afternoon and evening with free attractions including balloon ascensions and a parachute jump. Tom Baker of Sheridan will oversee concessions with a new rocket ride. Attorney David Baum, president of the Old Settlers Association, says an original program will be held at City Park in the afternoon. further details to be announced next week.
The Bringhurst Harvest festival returns Friday night July 25 sponsored by Bringhurst Methodist church drawing hundreds from Carroll County. The menu features the "biggest hamburger in Indiana for five cents" and home made pies cakes and ice cream. Funds support church programs via a church ladies led sale and a three auctioneers auction ranging from pigs to pies.
Mary Louise Reppert played a group of piano numbers at the July Altrusa club dinner in Lafayette. Selections included Czardas by MacDowell Etude in D flat by Liszt and Scherzo by Mendelssohn. She is asked to perform at the Farmers and Merchants picnic at Columbia Park in Lafayette with Valse in E by Moszkowski and other pieces.
Mrs Roy Redding broke her hip after a Wednesday fall at the Redding farm southeast of Delphi. She lay on the ground for minutes before discovery and was taken to the home hospital in the Grimm ambulance as construction on a near completed new residence continues nearby.
Governor Henry F. Schricker will address Indiana Sunshine Societies presidents on Tuesday July 29 at Camp Tecumseh. Sunshine girls are camping at Camp Tecumseh with Delphi representative Mary Jean Hildebrand.
Mrs Margaret Afflis of Delphi is reappointed as a member of the Indiana Teachers Retirement Fund board by Governor Henry F Schricker.
Thieves entered the Flora tool house, E. E. Landis implement store, and Flora elevator. Cash of 7.48 total was taken including 5.00 from the Landis register. A crowbar 20 gallons of gasoline two bars and a hammer were stolen. Authorities investigate with Deputy Sheriff Moore and Deputy Prosecutor Baum assisting.
Winners of the pet and hobby show at Delphi City Park on Wednesday were Betty and Bud Bartley for their ponies Francis Sebring for the most original bicycle decoration Nancy Clawson for her Chinese chickens Jerry Clawson for his billy goat Bill Driggs for the best decorated bicycle.
Eugene Burkle 59 of Clay township died at Home hospital Lafayette about 26 hours after being injured by a tractor on his farm. Survived by wife and four children Elwood Martha John and Albert. Funeral Saturday at 2 pm Lutheran church Pettit with Rev W E Allen officiating. Friends welcome after Friday noon.
Arthur McDowell of Delphi has been promoted to sergeant after enlisting for three years. He volunteered in January and serves at Fort Benjamin Harrison, receiving his stripes this week. John Baer of Brooklyn arrived in Delphi on Monday for a visit with his family.
Mrs Fannie Carney of Delphi had an operation Wednesday at St Vincent’s in Indianapolis where she has been a patient for several weeks. She will receive a blood transfusion today with several Delphi residents offering blood. Mrs Amos B Wise of east Delphi was taken to St Joseph’s Hospital in Logansport Tuesday evening by Blythe and Sons ambulance.
Citywide blackout rules issued for city residents and businesses. Citizens must switch off lights after the siren, pull to curbs, avoid street traffic, and follow police and guard officials for enforcement. The plan warns of no curfew one night and promises further details next week.
Delphi band members totaling 30 to 40 will camp at Camp Tecumseh from August 24 to 27. The trip, funded by the Chamber of Commerce’s summer concerts, covers all costs for the students and will include practice sessions and marching drills led by band instructor Clarence Morocco.
Richard G. Howe 49 fired a 410 shotgun through a door at his camp home on Lake Freeman, striking his brother Eber M. Howe 51 in the forehead and scalp. Richard, allegedly drinking, fled to a nearby cottage before being arrested. Mahlon Kerlin prosecutes on assault with intent to kill.
Delphi Mayor C. Clay Pearson announces a mock blackout on August 4 to educate residents on the defense program. The test includes moving planes, anti aircraft displays, sirens, and traffic halts, with officials from state police, sheriff deputies, Delphi Guard, and Legion coordinating.
Col John F. Landis formerly head of the Indiana University ROTC has been appointed post executive officer at Camp Croft South Carolina He replaces Col Louis A Kunzig who is transferred to Camp Blanding Florida Landis a 1910 West Point graduate has commanded the eighth training center at Camp Croft and is the son of the late Congressman Charles B Landis
Fourteen thousand dollars worth of dairy cattle from the Pine Manor herd were held in Delphi for several hours when the transport truck broke down near the Ford garage en route from Purdue to Goshen. The load included two national butterfat champions. County Auditor Wade W. Farr departed Delphi Saturday for Denver to visit Mr. and Mrs. L. J. Funderburg.
Roger Sturm, son of Rev. Roy Sturm of Delphi Methodist Church, becomes athletic director and basketball coach at Camden. He succeeds Lloyd Joyce who resigned to take a coaching job at Danville. Sturm is a DePauw University graduate.
