Deshi water consumers are using approximately 200000 gallons of water a day, nearly twice the normal. City officials Talmar and Arnold report the reservoir depth fell from 14 feet to about 10 or 11 feet during the drought, with possible restrictions if a large fire occurs.
Tri Delphi All Stars will meet the Flore and Rensselaer teams in a doubleheader at the local diamond Friday evening. First game starts at 7 30. Rensselaer claimed last season's sectional title as the Cardinals defeated the White Sox 17 to 15 in the prior game. Knitter, nursing an injured arm, pitched brilliantly for seven innings and is hailed as one of the best pitchers by visiting teams.
An open competitive examination for substitute clerk and substitute city carrier positions at the Delphi post office is announced by the U S Civil Service Commission. Applications must be filed with the Sixth U S Civil Service District manager in Cincinnati Ohio by July 29 1936. The exam date in Delphi is not yet set. Forms available at the local post office or from the district manager.
The Carroll County Young People picnic will be held Sunday afternoon July 26 at McCain's Grove four miles southeast of Camden. Rev Sink of Bachelor Run Church of the Brethren will speak. District 1 leads devotions and Earl Rodkey sings. Earl Powell and John Peterson run games. Dinner is served at 1. Committees include John McCain Lawrence Johnson ice tea Pauline Fouts Pauline Robeson Daniel Caldwell Robert Ayres John Barnhart Everett Chapman.
Hugh Barnhart the Democratic candidate for Congress spoke at a Lafayette luncheon honoring Tippecanoe county precinct committeemen. The event was hosted by Mrs. Thelma Wright with Mrs. Margaret Afflis present to introduce Mrs. Harry Shultz, wife of the district and county chairman.
In spring Frank Hoshaw of Ockley planned to plow up a barren wheat field due to scarcity. This week his threshed grain averaged 28 bushels per acre, a high yield for the area, and he vows never to plow under wheat again.
Indiana's largest newspaper group, Hoosier State Press Association, convenes in Monticello for a two day summer meeting. Registration starts Friday at 10 a m at Monticello Country Club, with luncheon at 12 15 p m and sessions to follow including Barton Rees Pogue as dinner speaker and Wray Fleming presiding. Saturday features round table discussions at the Sportsman's Club and a tour of the power plant with a buffet lunch, with lodging at the Foxtail Hotel, Sportsman's Club, and Ideal Beach.
Wayne Coy administrator of the State Department of Public Welfare clarifies that Indiana’s old age pensions are means tested and no blanket $30 monthly payment exists. The 1936 welfare act sets eligibility by need rather than all citizens 70 or older.
The 80th annual Old Settlers Day will be held in Delphi on August 8. Mrs Julia Hardy Irelan is president of the Old Settlers organization planning the program to be presented at the city park.
John Best Jr returns from Oklahoma City to fish while Jack Grimm and Peg Merriam of Springfield play tennis at the Beamer residence. Mrs. George Hall maintains a lush yard through drought with care and water. Other gardens belong to the Grimms Afflis Bradshaws Ulms Sheets Andersons and Wilsons.
Mr and Mrs Joseph Turner have closed their Washington street grocery store in Delphi ending a long run since 1909 They previously operated shops in Lucerne and Parmont prior to coming to Delphi
White County health officer Dr John C C Carney denies rumors of infantile paralysis germs in Shafer Lake water. He states no cases have been reported and the water is excellent for bathing.
In Indianapolis Indiana on July 22 the FHA office lists approved lenders in Carroll County. Banks include Burlington Bank Burlington Camden State Bank Camden Union State Bank Delphi Flora State Bank Flora and the Rockfield Branch of Union State Bank Delphi Rockfield. WPA labor finishes cement walks around the courthouse lawn under supervisor Clifford Bitler.
Dr John T Kirkpatrick not in office July 27 to Aug 8 while in Chicago for postgraduate work in spinal soft tissue and foot technique. Mrs Carl McFarland's condition after a paralytic stroke reported slightly improved.
The Arc theater will screen The American Red Cross To The Rescue on July 31 and August 1. The film, produced through the national Red Cross chapter, showcases the organization’s activities in cooperation with the local theatre.
The Carroll Telephone Company received a government payment check for the old post office site and used it to purchase the Frisbee Hotel building now housing Emrick cream station. The structure will be razed for a new modern government building, with work start date not yet known due to material cost increases and a new contract being let.

Carroll county residents used Camden park pool daily as heat drove bathers to creeks and rivers. WPA projects built a log dam at Camden enabling pool and diving board improvements at Deer Creek and Hufty’s beach, while Delphi pool awaits higher water after rains.

John Greenwalt is employed as a barber at the Lynch shop in Delphi. He is known locally for previously working at the Lucas and Randall shop.

Jack Orr son of Mr and Mrs For rest Orr has been awarded a county scholarship to Purdue University. The award covers one year of tuition. He will enroll in the school of pharmacy and follows his father and brother as Purdue pharmacy graduates.
A massive grass fire swept West Delphi on Wednesday, scorched acres, razed outbuildings, and threatened 30 000 gallons of gasoline and 2 000 gallons of oil at the Davies bulk plant. Monon tracks helped check the blaze as fire crews fought the drought sparked blaze.
Indiana Director Clarence Manion reports Carroll County rental and benefit payments total 775 085 54 in three years ending May 31 1936. National total for Indiana during the period reached 39 830 867 with 3 704 404 paid in first five months of 1936. Major payments include corn hog Wheat Sugar tobacco and more.
Miss Grace Swatts celebrated her birthday during a ten day visit with her brother Samuel Swatts and family in East Chicago aboard the cabin cruiser Maurine. The yacht was owned and navigated by her nephew J. J. Thayer of Chicago, son of Mr and Mrs B F Thayer of Delphi. Miss Swatts has returned to Delphi.
The Delphi girls softball team will face the Shamrock girls of Lafayette at the local diamond Tuesday evening. Despite smaller size and less experience they have enjoyed much success and lively participation. The Lafayette game is expected to draw a large crowd of fans.
County agents report wheat crops yielding mainly 12 to 28 bushels per acre with rye reaching up to 40 bushels. Notable results include Lew Moss farm near Burlington at nearly 35 bushels, Robert VanNatta with 25 bushels on 22 acres, George Anderson at 18, and the top yield by Earl VanNatta in Shelby township with 1570 bushels on 37 acres averaging 42 1/2 bushels per acre.
