Prof William Lynch recalls country schooling in Delphi where he describes nine years of study with Miss Alice M Crowder as a standout teacher. He explains the head-mark spelling race and how he won the top prize twice, aided by rival Frank Myers and supportive classmates.
A farm boy recounts early school spelling contests near Madison Township, a snowy night walk home, and childhood matches. He recalls Sue Wingard and John Gillam as local champions, the shift to ciphering, and the arrival of a railroad along the Delphi to Frankfort plank road era. He describes labor, earnings, and family life before 1890s changes.
The Carroll County Telephone Co held its annual meeting at secretary P M Byrums home. W G Million fell ill during the meeting and was taken home but is recovering from the flu. Mrs Nora Finney of Flora visited her father Frank Kennedy. Mrs Parks Groninger returned home after two weeks with ill relatives near Fairbury IL. The cooperative store stockholders met Saturday. Mrs Jannette Kay Roop and Mrs Addie Van Gundy Heir were reported deaths in Missouri and Indiana respectively. Jimmie Burke staying with the Greggs as his parents move to Peru. Monson Miller of Crawfordsville and Fred Miller hosted guests from Flora and Lafayette area. Johnnie Smith remains ill with the flu. Mable Welch is home ill. The Three Links Club danced Friday to aid flood relief. Sunday guests included several local families. Edwin Hall visiting his father Oscar Hall in Buck Creek this week.
