Mrs Willard Reed found her kitchen ablaze and smoke filling the house on Tuesday afternoon after visiting a sick friend. The fire was put out without calling the fire department. A wall cabinet contents curtains and woodwork were damaged.
The Union Bank and Trust Company of Delphi will observe Saturday February 12 as a legal holiday for Lincoln's birthday and will not be open for business.
The Carroll County War Board is reorganized to satisfy a law requiring a township trustee as a member. Wilbur Gale Crowell resigned to enable the change. Maude B. Carr is appointed to fill Crowell’s term, and Orvel C. Schock fills Mrs. Carr’s term as township trustee. Other members include Orval Hinkle Washington township, Mrs. John T. Kirkpatrick, and Jerre Haugh Delphi.
Delphi high school hosts a large state speech contest with 25 schools and 340 entrants. Trophies will prize top schools, as FHA members, led by Mary Lou Foster, provide lunch and the 9 a.m. event draws attendees to the high school.

Mr and Mrs Tol Sims of Brookston announce the engagement of their daughter Peggy to George Sheehan son of Mr and Mrs Ralph Sheehan of Delphi. They will marry on Saturday March 45 at the Church of Christ in Brookston. Mr Sheehan is discharged from the air force and works at Bassett and Talbert's in Delphi.
As part of the American Legion Back To God movement members will attend the Presbyterian church in a group on Sunday morning. All Legionnaires meet at the Legion home at 9 30 a m and march to the church at 9 45.
Dr. Earl K. Lashley, former Delphi Baptist pastor now at River Park Baptist Chicago, will preach morning and evening services this Sunday at the local church. He departs soon to attend the World Evangelism Congress in Sao Paulo as Michiana Men for Missions delegate.
Mr and Mrs Francis Wright purchase the Ben Weidner cottage on Horseshoe Bend and plan to move there soon from the Sieber apartments in a local property transfer recorded this week.
John Toole owner of the Western Auto Store in Delphi won both handicap and actual pins divisions in the Lions Bowling tourney held at the local alleys. Toole posted 874 handicap and 814 actual, top scores among 171 entrants. Other money winners included J Phillips Indianapolis 867 handicap and C Simons Kokomo 860. K Pettey Kokomo 893. William Max Fultz 18 of Route 1 New Richmond and Camden grandparents Ira and Mrs Fultz died after losing control of a 1951 convertible. He struck a guard rail and went over an abutment into a creek. Rex Fultz 16 and James Butsler injured. Police found the ice coated bridge approach and said the driver was pinned. Funeral held at Windgate.
Mrs Rajinbolt won the Cin derella Weekend program on WFBM TV in Indianapolis and will appear again on the show at a later date.
Wally Smith of Pittsburg was arrested at 2 45 p m by Sheriff Carey on public intoxication charges. He had attempted multiple arsons at his late brother Charles Smith home including throwing burning papers into the living room. Neighbors and the sheriff doused the fire before the fire department arrived and Smith was jailed in Cass County.

Klepinger of Bank and Trust Co. treasurer and Dorothea Shaffer was re elected secretary
More than 50 Deer Creek High School students and teachers have signed up to man an aerial observation post in the community. Forrest Hummel supervises with Dean Appleton as chief observer and Lee Brant as assistant to Seth Bend. In January 15 planes were spotted and wings awarded to Appleton Brant Jerry Goltz and Eddie McCloskey after 20 hours of volunteer service. Adults are urged to volunteer through Mr Hummel or Dean Appleton.
Florence Baer of Delphi and William Hanawalt of Idaville exchange nuptials at the Idaville Church of God with Rev. Adams officiating. A reception follows at the couple’s home before a Florida honeymoon and a return to the groom’s farm near Idaville.
Mrs. Robert Bradshaw reports $3324.53 turned in so far. Six Home Demonstration clubs have yet to file reports and should do so promptly. Last year the drive totaled $3624.90.
The American Agriculture Chemical Company bought 62.76 acres from Andrew Gerbens east of Delphi at the junction of highways 218 and 25.
At February meeting the Board awarded a one year contract to Esther Gregg as county health nurse with salary unchanged from last year.
Mayor Charles A. Wood urged participation in a Freedom Week balloon launch by the Delph i Aerie of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. At 2 p m February 12 on Lincoln’s birthday 20 plastic balloons will rise from the east side of the courthouse carrying messages for Radio Free Europe to bolster morale behind the Iron Curtain.
The Red Cross Bloodmobile will visit the Camden Community building from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday February 24. Local groups sponsor the drive and seek a quota of 105 pints. Donors should fast four hours prior and light meals are offered after donation. Appointments can be made with John Berkshire John McCain Lewis Mullin or at Camden State Bank.
Delphi district solo and ensemble contest in Fowler yielded 24 entries with fourteen first division ratings, six second divisions and three third divisions. First division solos went to Blythe Klepinger Parks Myers Keisling Hall Peterson Fisher Stokes. ensembles to Roach Hall Crosby Roach Henderson Gros Laprad Williams Johnson. second division honors to Peterson Johnson John son Pet erson Martin and others. third division to Logan Felix Larimore.
At a Monday and Tuesday meeting the Carroll County Commissioners bought three new highway department trucks from Paul Johnson Ford Sales Delphi for 7937.70. The trade in of three old trucks and 5300 cash accounted for the total, plus a pigeon deterrent treatment planned for the courthouse.
Letters of administration in the estate of Mary Wilson issued to Joseph W. Carey who qualified with a $2,000 bond. Street Kemmer and Carey serve as attorneys for the administrator.
Paul Jones, an employee of Hamiling Gryill, slipped on ice near his home last Friday and sustained a broken ankle.
