Flora Badgers hand Oracles 29 point loss in final Armory game

Flora Badgers defeated the Oracles 92 to 63 in Delphi Armory to close their season with a sharp shooting night led by Esserman who scored four baskets in the third period. The Oracles trailed 39 to 28 at halftime and only briefly narrowed the gap late. Ron Galloway missed most of the game with an injury, hampering Delphi’s effort.

1959 Highway Budget Omits Carroll County Projects

The 1959 state highway budget announced by Governor Harold W Handley lists no projects for Carroll County. No improvements are scheduled in 1959. For 1960 State Road 25 will be resurfaced from 1500 feet west of the SR 218 junction near Delphi to the south end of the Wabash River bridge in Logansport, about 17.60 miles, with no new Burlington bridge over Wildcat or straightening of SR 25 east of Delphi.

Dedication of New Wing at St James Hospital Pontiac IL

Mr and Mrs Burton Honan attended a ceremony in Pontiac Illinois for the dedication of a new wing at St James hospital and the consecration of a new altar in the chapel. The altar and furnishings were donated by John McGuire in memory of his grandparents Thomas and Mrs Winslow pioneer Livingston County residents. Bishop William Cousins of Peoria and newly appointed Archbishop of Milwaukee spoke at the dinner closing the event.

Carroll County Farm Schools Announced By Agent

Carroll County extension program lists winter schools led by Purdue specialists. Schedule includes sessions on Social Security and income tax, dairy tours, farm leases, district policy, annual SCD meeting, garden school, investment and inheritance transfer, pigs and pork, district craft school, cattle and sheep tours. Attendance last year was 373 locally and over 33 000 statewide across 523 schools.

Turkeys Die in Gray Fire at Hatchery south of Delphi

Several hundred turkeys perished in a Saturday night blaze at the Gray Hatchery south of Delphi on Highway 421. Mr and Mrs Virgil Gray owners arrived home about 9 pm and found the hatchery afire as Delphi firefighters extinguished the flames. The building housed more than 5,000 turkeys and smoke damage was extensive.

John Arthur Ritchey, son of Mr and Mrs Arthur Ritchey of Delphi, received his Doctor of Philosophy degree at the University of Chicago. Flora Wins Crops Judging Contest

Flora and Delphi teams placed first and second in the Crops Judging contest at the REMC on December 17. Flora led by Leon McGaughey featured Joe Myers Gary Skiles Dwight Pullen and Wayne Beckner with Max Snider of Flora scoring 765 points. Delphi coached by W S Weaver included Tommy Wagoner William Mullin Ronald Slavens and David Porter as top contestants. A total of 42 boys competed and the winners will represent Carroll County at the District contest in April. Burlington and Camden teams also competed with coaches Charles Noble and Ronald Rich respectively.

Nephew Dies in Toledo Funeral Rites Held in Toledo

Mrs. Mabel Chapman of route 3 Delphi learned Thursday of the death of her nephew Phillip Leslie 63 in Toledo Ohio. He was the son of the late Dr Frank Leslie a native of Carroll county. Surviving are his widow and a daughter. Burial and funeral services were in Toledo.

License plates go on sale Friday January 2

Residents who applied for 1959 license plates must bring the tax receipt and application to the auto license branch in Indianapolis by December 30 to reserve special numbers. Plates are orange with blue letters. Delmar Bailey heads the local office with assistants Mrs. Mildred Wilson, Mrs. Bailey, and Mrs. Justice Musselman. Starting next Monday Mrs. Kenneth McGill of Flora joins the staff. The branch closes Christmas and New Year’s Day.

Frank Armstrong Hurt In Accident

Frank Armstrong former Delphi and Yeoman resident is confined to a Tucson Arizona hospital with a broken leg and other injuries from a two car collision near his home in Tucson. His brother Bitter Armstrong traveled to Tucson to visit him.
