Local Youth Stars in Brigadoon at San Bernardino

Wayne L. Myers from Delphi Indiana and son of Mr and Mrs Hershell Myers of Ockley is lead in the San Bernardino Civic Opera Association presentation of Brigadoon at the San Bernardino Senior High auditorium. Myers, a Norton Air Force Base airman, trained in dramatics in Delphi and has appeared on television with Ginny Sims. The production features a 40 voice chorus, with drama director Stuart Campbell and musical director O V Hauschildt guiding rehearsals.

Teenagers Arrested After Local Crime Wave

Two 15 year old escapees from White’s Institute in Anderson were arrested in Columbus Indiana after a week of thefts. They admitted stealing cars in Wabash Fairmount and Delphi and breaking into businesses including Stuntz Yeoman firm and Messick’s Dog House. They were returned to Logansport jail for arraignment.

Diabetes and TB Screening Results in Carroll County

Officials announced 929 diabetes tests with 8 unsatisfactory and 93 positive results. Of 69 who pursued further exams, 6 were already known diabetics and 6 were new cases. TB screenings on 1446 films found 2 definite TB cases, 10 suspected, with 4 enlarged hearts and 7 chest defects.

Debate Club and Speech Class to Attend Mock Legislature

Twenty four members of the high school debate club and speech class will join the annual legislative assembly at Purdue University on Friday and Saturday. Leroy Skinner is slated as Delphi senator with Marion Wingard and Gwen Ferrier as representatives. They will serve on the economic affairs and military preparedness committees. Robert Jerry, the speech instructor, will accompany the group.

Death of Major John A. Helpert in Florida

Telegram to J O Julius reports Major John A Helpert 79 died of pneumonia in St Petersburg Florida. He was husband of Pearl Julius Helpert, cousin of Julius. Burial took place in Rochester New York. Mrs Helpert and her sister Mrs Hazel Sims of Flint Michigan traveled from St Petersburg to Rochester for the burial.

Jerry Daniels of Delphia and Sandra Cassell of Flora will perform on the Shady Acres Ranch Gang program aired from Indianapolis. The show runs Wednesday night, December 10, from 6:05 to 6:30 p.m.

Alan Lindley Appointed Deputy Auditor in Indiana

The Indiana auditor’s office expected to announce Alan Lindley as deputy auditor in Indianapolis. Lindley, from Cutler, has worked with the State Board of Accounts two years and previously served in Carroll County offices and as assistant county auditor during the two year real estate reassessment.

Chorus and Band To Present Christmas Concert at Armory

The Delphi high school band and choruses plan a Christmas concert on December 14 at 2 30 p m in the local armory. The junior band debuts this year with over 200 students involved. Gene Simons says three of five choral numbers will be Christmas themed. Tickets available from music department members or Wynkoop’s in Delphi.

Local Youth Attends Trieste Army School

Pfc William R Dyer recently graduated from an Army Non-Commissioned Officers Academy in Trieste. He ranked among the top in his class and trained in leadership tactics and allied subjects at the 351st Infantry Regiment run school. Dyer, a Delphi and Battle Ground High School alumnus, joined the Army in 1952 and is the son of Mr and Mrs Cecil Dyer of Delphi.

New Manager Arrives at Roxy Theatre

Herman Kolberg takes over as manager with wife and child moving soon to Delphi. He has 12 years in theatre work including 10 in Canada and comes from the Alliance theater in Alexandria Indiana. Miss Mary Patrick, who served as temporary manager, has returned to Frankfort.

Kite Retires From Public Service Company of Indiana

Grover Kite, foreman of the line crew, retires on December 1 at age 65 the companys mandatory retirement age. He began work for the Public Service Company in June 1921 and has served many years.

Camden Crowned Carroll County Champs In 42 33 Victory

Camden defeated the Oracles 42 to 33 to retain the Carroll county title. Key players included Frye for Camden and Til Abbott for the Oracles who left briefly with a dislocated shoulder. The Red Devils opened 12-10 in Q1 and extended the lead via free throws, while the Oracles faced a late stall and foul trouble. Delaware? Delphi? Grace M Miller Delphi Native Dies in Indianapolis

Grace Moore Miller wife of Owen L Miller died Tuesday evening at her Indianapolis home. Born February 1865 in Delphi she was daughter of Cameron Moore a pioneer merchant. She attended the University of Michigan and helped found O L Miller and Company in Indianapolis. Survivors include son Allan C Miller daughter Mrs George Falkenberg brother Jesse C Moore and three grandchildren.

Flames Destroy Delphi Canning Plant in Major Fire

Fire gutted the Delphi Canning Company owned by Leo Lutz and Associates. Mayor Charles Wood, Jim Trent and Fire Chief John Delaney watched as flames, aided by a NW breeze, destroyed 30,000 cases of tomatoes and damaged storage. Total losses feared around a quarter million dollars. records were saved and Monticello firefighters assisted.

Dick Clifford Injured In Wreck Near Battle Ground Road

Dick Clifford son of Mr and Mrs James R Clifford of Delphi sustained severe facial cuts and a tongue laceration after his car left highway 25 at Battle Ground hill Wednesday night. He was treated at St Elizabeth hospital and returned home the same day. Clifford, a traveling salesman for a St Louis clothing firm, was driving home from Gary when the car went 35 feet up the hill, rolled over into a ditch and threw him through the windshield. Local residents summoned aid and he was hospitalized briefly.

TB Seal Sale Stumbles Toward Goal in County Drive

Officials report only 1049.95 raised in the TB Seal Sale, about a third of the needed funding for TB and Health Association work this year. The drive funds diabetic tests at 15 cents and X ray readings at 10 cents per visit, among other projects. They urge/mail checks to TB headquarters today.

At Tuesday’s meeting the Board of Carroll County Commissioners awarded printing contracts for the coming year to Haywood Publishing Company for classes 1 2 and 3 Louden Printing Company for class 4 and Delphi Journal for class 5 The Delphi Citizen failed to bid for renewal of its class 4 contract.

Twenty one Carroll County Rural Youth Chorus members depart Delphi at 4 50 this afternoon to represent Indiana at the National Farm Bureau convention in Seattle. They raised 3000 for the trip through bake sales shows a scrap drive and local firm support led by director Kenneth Pyle.

Carol Flora of Madison to ship the 1952 Carroll County Champion Corn Yield with 161.2 bushels per acre. Fifty eight club members yields ranged from 161.2 to 58.6 bu/acre.
