The Old Settlers Association met at Dorothy Mills home to select new officers for the year. Richard Grantham was named president with Mrs Hazelle Hoshaw Kirkpatrick as vice president and Clara M Sims as secretary. Directors include Miles T Martin Mrs Walter Neff Arthur Ritchey Robert Bradshaw David R Baum Mrs Ben Been Mrs Earl Newell Earl Fouts and Noah Flora. The research director Mrs B B Mayhill said the theme for the year will be Cultural and Building Progress Scenes and Times of 1857.
Four speed boat operators were arrested at Fraziers Beach on Lake Freeman after lakefront residents complained. Walter Murray Tipton faced reckless operation after hitting a pier, Charles Leman Lafayette charged with no muffler, Charles Aveline Lafayette with inadequate muffler, Marion Funkhouser Lafayette charged with reckless operation. They were arraigned before JP Herman Theophile and pled not guilty.
Wayne Knitter of Delphi is named the 1956 57 Schlumberger Collegiate Award winner at Purdue University. The $500 annual scholarship, renewable with good grades, was awarded after nomination by the Purdue School of Electrical Engineering. Knitter, son of Harold and Bud Knitter, is a 1954 Delphi High School graduate entering his junior year with a 5.6 GPA.
The Little League season heads to a final championship Saturday after tonight’s tiebreaker between Lions Cubs and Globe Valve White Sox to decide the second half winner, with Eikenberry Indians already securing the first half. Tonight features business and professional men night at 6 p.m. at Little League Park, followed by a Dads versus Lads game at 6:30 as a prelude to the title tilt.
The United States Court of Military Appeals held a special session at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center on August 15. Lt. Col. David R. Baum and Lt. Carl D. Overhelser, Delphi attorneys on Active Duty at Fort Sheridan, Illinois, were admitted to practice before the court on a motion by Col. William Belser Jr. They participate in Military Legal Training sponsored by the Judge Advocate General's School, with Col. Baum among the speakers and instructors.
Carroll County residents 106 strong offered to donate at the August 20 Bloodmobile visit. Of these, 94 pints were accepted, failing to meet the 110 pint quota. Bill Dickinson and Harold Berry received gallon pins for their donations. thanks were extended to donors and assisting committees.
The article recounts Carroll County’s last murder case from October 1, 1935, when Luther Wells was killed near Delphi. Wohl lured Wells, killed him with a blow and a .22 bullet, stole over $100, and was later convicted, sentenced to life, and committed to a mental institution.
Twenty members of the Home Ec Chorus of the county and guests traveled to Chicago to compete in the Chicago land Music Festival. Carroll chorus placed third in the Chicago finals for women’s choruses and joined the massed choir for the festival. The group attended an event luncheon and sang at the First Congregational Church.
Paul Richard Jones route 1 Dyer was arrested on a warrant for break-ins at the Esserman DX station Flora and the Highway grill Burrows on July 23. He pleaded in city court and received the maximum city term six months at Indiana State farm a 36500 fine and costs totaling 32.85.
John L. McCartney of Logansport was arraigned in Carroll circuit court and pleaded guilty to breaking and entering the Ed Esserman station in Flora on July 22. Judge William B. Smith sentenced him to 1 to 10 years at the Indiana Reformatory.
Since Aug 15 Coach Tony Berto has led the Hawks through twice daily practices ahead of the Sept. 7 season opener with Sheridan. With a small senior class and multiple position shifts, key grads like Hanna Wag oner Wallace Wentzel left gaps at guard end and quarterback while newcomers and returning players fill dual roles and battle for varsity time.
Mrs. Bertha E. Ackerman 41 of south of Delphi died Sunday at 3 10 AM in Cleveland Clinic Hospital Ohio after heart surgery performed by Dr Donald B Effler. Born October 1 1915 in Indianapolis she married Glenn Ackerman January 9 1941 and lived near Deer Creek. Survived by husband three children two sisters and a brother. Funeral at St Joseph church with burial in St Joseph cemetery. Eikenberry funeral home in charge.
County Superintendent Harry Hatton outlines opening plans for grade and high schools with meeting dates for principals, teacher in service, and enrollment on Aug 29 30. Pittsburg and Delphi open Sept 4 with altered enrollment. Rockfield principal Trussell Wolfe resigns to teach at Rossville. Deer Creek commerce vacancy remains.
Tom Johnson of Indianapolis is spending the week with his grandparents Mr. and Mrs. C. T. Amick, enjoying family time and a break from daily routines.
The Delphi school board released Harold Dick from duties after his resignation and named Noel Douglass as the new principal, bringing a Walcott background and Navy service to the Kentland district. Douglass starts this week. New teachers Clarence Weick Norma Fulton Donna Snoddy join a full faculty ahead of the Sept 4 opening.
John Joseph Petrig files for divorce from Mary Robertson Petrig in Cass circuit court Logansport. They married May 5 and separated August 14 of this year. Mary Robertson Petrig is a Delphi resident.
Three year old Pat Robertson son of Mr and Mrs Melvin Robertson of West Franklin Street Delphi received serious but not critical injuries at noon Monday when he fell from a second floor outdoor landing to the paved alley below. The child was playing on the unguarded landing and tumbled to the ground. A local physician gave first aid and he was sent to St Elizabeth hospital in the Eikenberry ambulance. Doctors believe he suffered a brain concussion fractured ribs and possible other internal injuries.
Betty J. Sheehan files an absolute divorce suit against David O. Sheehan in Carroll Circuit Court. The couple wed May 6, 1955 and separated August 17 of the current year. Hanna and Hanna represent the plaintiff.
Howard Waddups and William Voss admitted a long series of break ins across Pulaski Cass Carroll and White counties starting last October. They confessed to robberies at Yeoman Ida ville Noble Two school VFW Winamac Co Op elevator Idaville Lucerne Grass Creek Sunoco Logansport Socony Vacuum Bulk Plant Stony Pike Packing plant Eagles Lodge Thornhope elevator Star City Lumber yard Russell Packing plant and other sites. They will face arraignment in Carroll circuit court.
The High School Principal's Office will be open weekdays until September 4 except Labor Day. Students in grades 7 to 12 should report Friday August 24 or Monday August 27 to receive schedules and book lists. The book store opens Monday August 27 from 8 to 12 and 1 to 4.
Mr and Mrs Frank Lachen maier of route 1 Delphi purchased the property of the late Mr and Mrs Frank Weckerly on Front Street.
Mrs James Shirk, Mr and Mrs Royal Ray and their son John of Tallahassee Florida will stay in Delphi for a few days from August 24 to September 1. Mrs Shirk will be the guest of Mrs E W Bowen.
Karen D Brown was granted a divorce from Billy Brown in Carroll circuit court on Wednesday afternoon. The ruling awarded custody of a minor child to Brown. Attorneys Hanna and Hanna appeared for the plaintiff.
Fifty Carroll county agricultural members will exhibit at the Indiana State Fair from August 29 to September 4. The list includes nine beef exhibitors led by Eddie Langston and Linda Langston, thirteen swine exhibitors such as Roger Frey and Gary Crume, one sheep exhibitor James Bray, eight poultry exhibitors, six garden exhibitors, and various entomology electric forestry and wildlife exhibitors. Harold Berry notes thirty-three boys will stay at the State Fair Boys Camp with George Ringer and Dennis Zook named as achievement winners sponsored by local companies.
Mr and Mrs Don Howat conclude a visit with her parents Mr and Mrs Frank Hoan and return to their home in Chicago.
