The seventy fifth Old Settlers Day in Delphi drew hundreds for a day of picnics, parades and a balloon ascent. Activities featured music, readings, costumes, and a list of attendees from multiple Indiana towns, with community leaders presiding and a large night crowd celebrating past days.
The family of Frank Broadrick prepares to move to Indianapolis next Monday. The vacated house, owned by EB Embree, has been leased to Frank Quinn.
Nineteenth Beard family reunion will be held in the city park next Sunday August 17. A basket dinner is planned as a feature of the gathering.
Relatives and friends announce the marriage of Logan Arnold and Miss Lucile Garner in Chicago last weekend. Arnold, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Arnold, is a Delphi high school graduate who attended Purdue and Michigan and worked in Chicago in the Sinclair Oil Co engineering department. The bride, little known in Delphi, visited once with her husband’s relatives. The couple have set up housekeeping in Chicago and plan a Delphi visit soon.
At a Monday board meeting the Country Club adopted new rules for all social events. Household members with one full membership may attend, committee members cover entertainment costs, and guests may be invited with small fees for non-house guests. Clubhouse rental rates and cleaning charges are set, with season adjustments and conditions for house versus non resident guests.
Jesse Randall, local Legion fight promoter, has booked six bouts totaling twenty eight rounds for Wednesday night August 20 at the Armory. Main event features Eddie Blake vs Johnny Johnson at 118 pounds with eight rounds. semi final Muddy Rule vs Chet Henderson at 165 pounds. other bouts include Russ Campbell vs Kid Spurlock 142 pounds. Jep Smith vs Jimmie Edwards 165 pounds. Marshall Abbersole vs Glenn Campbell 165 pounds. Gate price raised to 1.00 after initial 0.75 plan. First gong at 8 o clock.
Willis F Mummert administrator of Earl T Mummert seeks 10000 in a circuit court. The Rock Creek farmer was killed Sept 10 1928 in Rockfield after a train strike. The complaint cites obstructed tracks with coal sheds and a box car plus no watchman bells lights or warning devices.
Loren Chittick county distributor for Buick Oakland and Pontiac cars announced reductions yesterday afternoon. Pontiacs and a custom sedan received price cuts, with details on the coach prices and models mentioned.
Herbert Smith local Philco radio dealer erects the first neon sign in Delphi on Washington street. When lit the sign will attract attention and displays the name Neon, derived from its inventor showing a flowing current appearance.
A Lafayette meeting of Democrats gathered Tuesday with nine counties represented. Chairman Peters presided and state office candidates attended. Mrs. James P. Wason and Mrs. Margaret Afflis of Carroll county joined the gathering.
Delphi Country club members traveled to Logansport on Sunday to play the shinny club. Delphi won decisively by scores of 75 and 77, avenging an earlier loss. Guests included players and their wives enjoying an afternoon bridge party at the Logansport club house with refreshments.
Theodore Quillin of Logansport attends old settlers meetings as a hobby. Though not a native of Carroll county he appears spry and sharp at age about a century. Born June 10 1822 in Brownslow Wayne county he enlisted April 6 1861 in Detroit as a First Michigan Infantry member and fought in Civil War battles including Bull Run.
Dispatches from Indianapolis report Governor Harry Leslie will cut his Canadian vacation to meet President Hoover in Washington for a conference aimed at relief for drought stricken Indiana farmers especially in the south. Secretary L C Chasey says data is being prepared from a state tour to guide the effort including a proposed ten percent tax delinquency penalty lift to help farmers reestablish themselves.
Mrs. Charles Hornbeck age 79 died at her home in West Lafayette on Friday two days after the death of her husband last week. Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon by Rev. Carl Reed from Blythe funeral home and burial followed at Morning Heights cemetery.
George W. Campbell, age 80, died Thursday at the County Home. Funeral services were held from Blythe funeral home Friday at 2:30 PM, with burial in the Great Eastern cemetery.
A Republican gathering was held in Flora last Tuesday night with county candidates and precinct workers attending. Some attendees traveled from Delphi to join the deliberations.
Willis Eikenberry and Charles Minger, two young soloists from Delphi and Fostoria, Ohio, will join the Indianapolis schools music program next year. The fifteen and sixteen year olds have risen as notable cornet duetists in the Wainwright band. Fostoria mourns the loss of this notable music master.
Twin daughters Mary Joan and Marion June were born to Mr and Mrs Joseph Blake of Pittsburg last Friday and lived only two hours. They were buried in Pittsburg cemetery. Mrs Blake, seriously ill, is said to be improving.

James Embree of Delphi, age 71, died at his home after a four year illness. He was born in Hamilton County and once ran a business with his brother E W Embree on East Franklin Street. Survived by widow, daughter Mabel Herod, brother E W, two sisters in Dayton and Kansas City, and two grandchildren, Margaret and James Bundy. Funeral Friday at the family home with interment in the Odd Fellows cemetery.
The court plans to open the September term on September 8 with Judge E E Pruitt forecasting a heavy docket. Work includes wall cleaning by Max Leppold, replacement of damaged shades and blinds, and review of furniture and fixtures. A $40,000 breach of warranty case from Jasper County is set for the first week, with other hearings and probate matters on the docket.
A full schedule for the American Legion and Auxiliary state meeting at Ft Wayne on Aug 23 to 26 includes an air circus dance banquet rifle matches golf at Elks course church services parade ball games and two concerts by a 125 member Legion band with fireworks. Officers to be elected in separate Legion and Auxiliary sessions Tuesday.
