Planting and caring for strawberries in August and September

The Agricultural Department advises planting strawberries in August and September for next year’s fruit. Choose warm dry ground with loamy subsoil, avoid moist sites, subsoil two feet deep, enrich poor soil with stable manure, and keep plants moist after transplanting. Use shade such as inverted pots to protect leaves and water thoroughly before hoeing and leveling the bed. Strawberries should be grown in beds about four feet wide with three rows per bed and plants foot apart to ease harvesting.
