Alpacas of Peru and a United States trial in domesticating them
The Lama or alpaca, native to Peru, is a small humped yet necked member of Camelidae valued for wool used in shawls and alpaca fabric. It carries about 150 pounds, is hardy, and thrives on coarse forage. Attempts to introduce them to the United States have occurred, led by a French gentleman, but market and trials remain inconclusive. Yankee enterprise may decide their profitability as a domestic animal in the future.
