A hurricane hunter flight from San Juan reported Betsy well out in the Atlantic with no land danger. Winds near the storm’s center reached about 100 mph with gusts higher, while gale winds extended 200 miles to the northeast and 75 miles to the southwest. The hurricane, about 1,000 miles east of San Juan and 2,000 miles east-southeast of Miami, is expected to move northwest with little change in size for 12 hours and likely pass east of Bermuda barring unforeseen pressure shifts.
Norman Kettering, 37, a fisherman from National City, was stabbed in the right thigh when a marlin leaped aboard his 35-foot cruiser on Saturday. His wife and a teenage passenger helped bring the fish aboard before Coast Guard medics treated him and he was hospitalized.

About 5,000 Britons marched to the Soviet Embassy in London in a protest against the resumption of nuclear tests by the Soviet Union. The demonstration highlighted public opposition to resumed testing and drew attention to disarmament concerns.
