Chester investigators report a brief arson lull has ended as a crackdown yields new arrests and a pending trial. authorities say the arson wave, linked to several incidents including a porch fire on Concord Avenue, continues with surveillance intensified by a joint task force and public tips.
Garnet Valley and Chester Upland school districts face ongoing threat of teacher strikes. A 3-1 vote approves eight teachers awaiting state mediator Robert Houck to resume the William Penn dispute. Classes are planned to proceed on schedule, with factfinding hearing set for 10 a.m. Monday.
A four alarm blaze destroyed a 40 000 square foot warehouse off Industrial Highway in Eddystone and damaged nearby buildings at the former Baldwin Lima Hamilton plant. The fire, started about 5 30 p m Monday, felled at least 20 firefighters and prompted extensive evacuations and power shutoffs as 250 firemen fought the flames into the night. No definitive damage estimate yet.
A town meeting at UP 880 Island auditorium featured business owners including a fried chicken restaurant owner who shared hardship stories. Latrobe Brewing Co workers approve a new three year contract in a 97 to 30 vote ending a 31 day strike. The deal includes a $1 per hour immediate raise, 80 cents in year two and 20 cents in year three, plus improved pension benefits and fringe benefits.
Energy costs in the Philadelphia area increased 0.7 percent in July from June, with overall energy prices up 2.9 percent from a year earlier. Gasoline slipped 0.4 percent while electricity surged 4.2 percent. electricity costs are about 39 percent higher than last July. Home heating oil and residential gas stayed stable, but remain 36.3 percent higher than a year ago.
