Boeing Vertol officials said a $33 million contract with British Airways Helicopters to build three commercial Chinooks will create about 1,200 new jobs at the Ridley Township plant, boosting total employment from 4,300 to 5,000 by next year end and adding 500 more by 1980. The order is the largest commercial helicopter contract in aviation history, with options for three more and potential markets for 72 aircraft in coming years. The Chinook will transport oil crew teams in the North Sea, offering 44 passenger capacity and cargo flexibility, while Boeing also develops a utility model for logging and construction with a 28,000-pound lift capacity.
