Delaware County Daily Times reports former Upper Merion principal Jay Smith, jailed for armed robbery, allegedly discussed killing English teacher William Bradfield with fellow convict Raymond Martray. Grand jury details telephone conversations and videotaped meetings showing Smith's requests to kill Bradfield if charged, dispose of bodies, and aid an escape plot.
In February discussions surfaced about a high profile case. Bradfield and Smith debated how to respond to questions about involvement. Smith claimed he would instruct associates to bar a lie detector test. A second inmate, Charles Montione, was said to be part of the conversations.
The inmate who claimed in a grand jury presentment that Jay Smith admitted killing Susan Reinert had previously testified the former Upper Merion High School principal told him he had nothing to do with the murder. Documents show Smith also said Raymond Mattray could testify that another prisoner confessed to two armed robberies tied to Smith. Witnesses described roles of Bradfield and Reinert, with Martray linking Smith to perjury and the Reinert killings. Last night Smith’s private eye Kolins could not be reached for comment.
