College chairman elected at Delaware County Community College

The Delaware County Community College trustees elected Alex B. Owen, Wallingford executive and longtime board member, as the new chairman as they seek a new president. The meeting included a protest by student government president James Corrigan over procedures for replacing four founding trustees, and names were disclosed for the upcoming nominating process. The board discussed a tuition hike for the academy at the college from 980 to 1200 dollars, attributing part of the increase to a student shortfall and state funding arrangements.

Republican appointed to non political post named director

A Republican appointee, Groves, was named director of the state Bureau of Industrial Safety by L I Secretary Myron L. Joseph. The $30 357 annual post follows a pattern of Delaware County appointments. Groves, longtime corporate safety director for the former Food Fair chain, said politics influenced his hiring and that he presented his resume last fall to Gov. Dick Thornburgh’s administration. He has not been active in county Republican politics. The prior pattern of appointing Delaware County figures to state posts is noted, with Groves previously heading Risk Management Systems and Services Inc Ardmore and serving municipal clients in Haverford Lower Merion Clifton Heights. Groves is a graduate of Southeast Essex Technical College and pursued industrial safety studies at Temple University.
