Israel to release 31 Lebanese prisoners amid hostage crisis
Israel announced plans to free 31 Lebanese prisoners on Monday as discussions continue over the TWA hijacking and the fate of 40 American hostages. Nabih Berri demanded the release of more than 700 Lebanese held in Israel, while Israel framed the move as a test of control and an effort to ease the Lebanon situation without bowing to terrorism.
Hostages in Lebanon Crisis Move Toward Release
One American captive was killed by hijackers and the rest freed or promised release as Amal militia holds some of the 40 Americans. Swiss officials say Berri agreed in principle to free hostages but sought the release of Lebanese Shiite prisoners in exchange. Diplomatic talks involving Austria, Switzerland, Syria, and the US, plus Red Cross negotiations, aim to resolve the crisis.

Reagan rules out military action to free hostages
President Reagan said he has ruled out a military response to gain release of the U S hostages in Beirut and declined to connect Israel s release of 31 Shiite prisoners to the hostages. He said there is no linkage and declined to comment on future steps or progress in freeing the 40 Americans. Secretary Shultz warned against underestimating Reagan s resolve in handling the crisis.
