Pope meets Jaruzelski as Solidarity march breaks up

Pope John Paul II held a surprise meeting with Polish ruler Wojciech Jaruzelski in Krakow while police dispersed the largest pro Solidarity march since martial law. Several arrests were reported, including two foreigners, as Lech Walesa headed toward the pope for a scheduled visit. The PAP news agency noted the encounter aimed at peace and social life in Poland.
