Ex D A and successor clash over charges at courthouse
Washington County judge denied former district attorney Herman J. Bigi’s bid to file criminal charges against his successor John C. Pettit who cites a conflict with the state attorney general’s office. Pettit had pressed assault charges against Bigi after a May 13 fistfight in the county courthouse. The intercession by the attorney general on Bigi’s behalf was deemed inappropriate. In Philadelphia, University of Pennsylvania trustees voted to divest its 34.8 million dollar stake from firms operating in South Africa citing lack of progress to end apartheid, affecting Boeing Caterpillar and Tenneco.

Oil fee proposal rattles senators
A coalition of Northeast and Midwest senators plans to block a proposed oil import fee tied to a trade bill. The plan would empower the president to act if imports rise to 50 percent of U.S. consumption, with a variable fee to curb foreign oil. Sen Lloyd Bentsen pushes the measure as Sen Heinz and others seek ways to defeat it, arguing it would mainly benefit a few states.
