Boat Helmsman Blacked Out On Causeway Collision
NEW ORLEANS AP The helmsman of the Rebel boat says he fainted and fell onto a steering lever driving the tug and barges into the Lake Pontchartrain causeway. The barges struck a 224 foot section of the 24 mile bridge, sent a bus into the water, and killed six of eight aboard. Clifford Milley, 26, said from his hospital bed he must have fallen on the lever after blacking out, steering the vessel toward impact. He was alone on the pilot house.

System May Save Subs
REDLANDS Calif AP Navy awards a 4.2 million contract to develop a system engineers say might have saved the ill fated submarine Thresher. The plan adds solid propellant rocket engines in ballast tanks to vent water during deep sea emergencies. Thresher sank near New England on April 10 1963 with 139 aboard after a deep test dive. Experts say the exact cause remains undetermined but the conventional compressed air system could not vent ballast quickly enough to halt the dive.
