Death benefit cuts worry Delaware County officials

Before last October a deceased veteran family could receive 780 in Social Security and veterans death benefits for funeral costs. Now only 225 is available, with total funeral costs ranging from 2100 to 3800 including gravesite expenses. The medical examiner urged the county to plan for cheaper disposal options, exploring cremation and possible burial on grounds at Fair Acres Geriatric Center. Local funeral directors warn of rising unclaimed bodies and say the cuts depress grievers, though county charities cushion the impact.
