Edgar Edges Specter In Labor Convention Cheer-off
At the 26th annual AFL-CIO constitutional convention in Philadelphia Sen. Arlen Specter and Rep. Robert Edgar spoke 40 minutes apart. Edgar announced plans to challenge Specter in 1986, claiming Specter is weak on labor and presenting himself as Pennsylvania’s best choice to push progressive leadership and resist unfair trade. Specter urged labor to unite against subsidized foreign goods and to bolster steel and textile sectors while hinting at a future campaign, drawing cheers from about 500 delegates.
