Swiss voters reject right to life proposal
Swiss voters defeated by more than two to one a proposed constitutional amendment to severely limit abortions and ban some contraceptives. Turnout was 35.1 percent with 69 percent against and 31 percent for the measure. 19 cantons opposed, seven supported. The proposal, backed by Roman Catholics and conservatives, would have allowed abortions only to save the mother’s life and banned certain contraceptives. Opponents, including the government and major church bodies, warned of more illegal abortions and “gynecological tourism.”
