Spelling Champion Goes to Washington

Delaware County's 1969 spelling champion Linda B Alle a 13 year old eighth grader from Newtown Junior High left for Washington to compete in the National Spelling Bee. She and her mother began travel from Chester and will be joined later by her father and siblings. The week includes tours, luncheons, and a hotel banquet with a Latvian legation luncheon planned. Contests run Wednesday through Thursday with Friday's awards.

Foreign oilmen doomed by Biafra

The Biafrans sentenced 18 foreign oil workers to death amid the Nigeria Biafra conflict as bodies of 11 other workers were recovered. The 14 Italians three Germans and one Lebanese were among 29 missing during clashes near Okpai. AGIP said the workers did not fight for Nigerians. Authorities described grim discovery of bodies after Biafran forces overran a camp.

Runoff Forces In France Headed To June 15 Battle

Georges Pompidou led with 43.95 percent in the first round in continental France. Alain Poher followed with 23.44 percent, Jacques Duclos won 21.53 percent for the Communists. Four other candidates divided the remainder, prompting a runoff to decide the seven year presidency. Poher refuses to accept Communist votes, Pompidou pushed for national reconciliation as campaigns neared the June 15 runoff.

Cooler Weather Predicted Across Five Day Outlook

Supreme Court bans discrimination at private recreation areas

The Supreme Court ruled 7 to 1 that privately owned recreation areas offering swimming and picnicking cannot exclude Negro members under the 1964 civil rights law. Justice Brennan said Lake Nixon Club near Little Rock is a public accommodation, while Justice Black dissented.

Boy Drowns In Philadelphia Reservoir

A 11 year old West Philadelphia youth fell into a city reservoir while walking a sloping bank and drowned. Fairmount Park Police recovered the body after a three hour search Sunday night. the victim was Wynfield Frisby, son of Mrs Ethr Frisby.

American Adviser Is Killed In Saigon Rocket Attack

Viet Cong rockets struck Saigon for the first time in two and a half weeks. An American Army adviser was killed at Dak To air field as paratroopers and South Vietnamese militiamen fought encroaching Viet Cong in the highlands. The clash near Saigon involved 11 hours of sporadic fighting with several enemy dead and captured, while U.S. forces reported rocket and mortar attacks with light overall damage. Meanwhile Hanoi claimed Viet Cong victories around Dak To as waves of B52 bombers pounded targets in North Vietnam and Laos.
