Wallingford Red Cross hero rescues trapped Iowa woman
Jackie Hayden, a Philadelphia Red Cross disaster volunteer, drove a box van through four inches of rain in Council Bluffs to reach a stalled car and pull a woman to safety as floodwaters rose. Hayden then helped comfort the rescued woman before continuing relief rounds. Her husband and parish say she underplays the act, though the Midwest deployment marks her first major disaster assignment. Hayden has trained for nearly two years and is among ten Philadelphia-area volunteers aiding the Midwest response.
