The Senate approved a measure to lower the voting age to 18 amid debate on youth radicalism and campus disturbances. The bill, with bipartisan support from 20 Republicans and 16 Democrats, moves to the House for passage and then to voters for final approval.
A bill introduced in Harrisburg would legalize rent strikes across all municipalities. It would grant tenants amnesty from eviction for at least a year and exempt landlords from liability, outlining escrow provisions and penalties for noncompliance.
Dr William Masterson, newly named Rice University president, resigned under pressure from about 1 000 students and 200 faculty protesting a trustee selection breach. He said accepting the post would create dissension and will remain president of the University of Chattanooga Tennessee.
At Penn State University Park about 500 students demonstrated to press for more black students and black faculty, with Douglass Association leaders demanding 7,700 more black enrollees by fall. University President Eric Walker notes the plan cannot reach that increase, while white demonstrators debate tactics and impact on campus affairs.
Doctors at Walter Reed report Former President Dwight D. Eisenhower, 78, is progressing after abdominal surgery for an intestinal obstruction. A Tuesday bulletin says he had a comfortable day, his cardiovascular status stable, and he read briefly with Mrs. Eisenhower visiting. His son said the situation is well in hand.
