In Harrisburg the Constitutional Convention narrowly backed preserving the current 50-seat Senate and 203-member House. The 102-35 vote protected the status quo as delegates debated reforms to modernize government, expand home rule powers, and revise the state constitution through pending amendments and new judiciary provisions.
Washington reports a Joint Chiefs of Staff proposal to mobilize about 50,000 National Guardsmen and Marine reserves, plus 130,000 reservists on alert for possible later callup. The plan aims to reinforce U.S. forces abroad as Vietnam war needs rise. Generals Wheeler and McNamara move amid Congress critique of U.S. troop levels.
Pennsylvania teachers call for higher salaries after observing Florida walkouts. PSEA president Joseph Standa urges action, endorsing a March 4 statewide demonstration in Harrisburg and 30 percent of districts already using unpaid holidays. The group lists a March 22 deadline for salary and subsidy bills.
Florida teachers ended the first week of statewide walkouts with about one third of schools shut. An FBI issued arrest warrant targets Lawrence M. Rhodes Jr. for hijacking a Delta DC8 and forcing 108 passengers toward Cuba. The case links a Christmas Eve payroll robbery in Logan County West Virginia to Rhodes who had been living around Tampa Florida with his wife. Cuban authorities consider his asylum request as jets pursue the hijacked airliner.
Washington AP reports a large FBI and police operation at the Soviet Embassy debris scene after a Wednesday morning blast. Authorities seek a bushy-haired man seen by a cab driver and have not disclosed the explosive type.
Veteran bandleader Guy Lombardo, 65, is progressing satisfactorily after artery repair at Methodist Hospital. Doctors expect discharge in about 10 days and full recovery, with the operation unrelated to his heart. Lombardo, born June 19, 1902, in London Ontario, has led orchestras for decades and sold over 25 million records.
A tigon a cross between a tiger and a lion and among the world’s rarest animals died in its sleep at Belle Vue Zoo in Manchester. The 12 year old animal had been a gift from the Sultan of Morocco and was valued at 100.
Burglars ripped off a Ventura clothing store taking 25000 dollars in goods including several pairs of trousers for the Oxnard Police Department. The proprietor reported the theft and noted the police pants were among the items.
Algiers authorities say 17 men have been arrested on charges of plotting to assassinate Kaid Ahmed head of the National Liberation Front and other national leaders. The arrests underline security concerns in the capital and follow investigations into anti state plots.
In Lincolnshire England farmer William Hardy reports a field scarred by war era ordnance. Sappers using metal detectors unearthed 250 mortar and smoke bombs over two days on his 50 acre tract once a World War II mortar range. Hardy, 33, says farming this land feels dangerous after a bomb damaged a tractor and he finally called the army.
