AP reports widespread condemnation as Israel shot down a Libyan airliner over the Suez Canal region killing more than 100 people. Nations and press condemn the act as brutal and reckless while Israel cites disobedience of orders by the French pilot.
A gas explosion during sewer work leveled an apartment building in Coopersburg Pennsylvania killing five and injuring twenty two. Four victims lived in the apartment building and the blast damaged nearby houses as emergency crews, police and volunteers conducted search and rescue. The area remains under control as recovery continues.
Governor Milton Shapp proposed a $117.5 million revenue sharing budget to aid county government the elderly mentally retarded and motorists with potholes. He urged $34 million for road repairs and $27.5 million to expand education for the mentally retarded while reallocating funds to support the aged blind and disabled under a 1974 federal shift.
In Harrisburg the Senate passed a bill 30-14 enabling liquor sales on election days including the March 13 Philadelphia special election to fill the Donlow seat. The measure, sent to the House, would apply beyond primaries and general elections and aims to ease staff off days conflict while ending the Revolutionary era ban.
Gov. Milton J. Shapp told mayors and county commissioners that more than 350 million dollars in federal support funds could be lost. He urged using federal revenue sharing with state funds to sustain essential programs and suggested counties reserve blocks of revenue for future use.
Police recovered the coffin of Marshal Philippe Petain in a northern Paris suburb after an advertising executive Hubert Massol 34 claimed he led the theft. Massol was arrested at a news conference near the Arc de Triomphe. Authorities plan to return the body to its tomb on the isle of Yeu.
Philadelphia turns to federal mediator W J Usery Jr to end a six week teachers strike. unions demand negotiations in good faith as arrests of pickets and jailed leaders prompt calls for settlement and tax-funded steps to raise pay.
Delaware County AFL-CIO leaders say no specific council will join the Philadelphia teachers strike on a mandatory basis but will consider voluntary participation. Officials expect about 15,000 delegates to demonstrate next week at City Hall and Board of Education Building, with some unions ready to provide funds and moral backing though pay would be lost for workers who join.
Harrisburg AP reports William J. Wewer of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission announced immediate free admission for residents aged 63 and older to about 80 state operated historic sites, properties, and museums. Typical charges ranged from 25 cents to 1 dollar, averaging 50 cents.
Army Captain Johnnie Ray and his wife Dorothy renewed their vows in a Brooke Army Medical Center ceremony after Ray was freed from a Viet Cong prison camp. The couple, married 4 1/4 years ago, welcomed a new chapter as Ray embraced his wife and three children following his disappearance in Tay Ninh Province on April 8, 1972. Also present were fellow ex prisoners Sergeant Ken Wallingford and Specialist Keith Albert who were released from separate camps.
