Chester Library Closure Sparks Protest at Crozer Branch

About 100 residents including many women and children protested in front of the J. Lewis Crozer Library main branch as officials announced the closing citing high operating costs. The marchers demanded public notification and questioned funding options with the Chester Upland School District contributing over 60 thousand dollars previously. city and district financial troubles were cited. The branch at 3rd and Eagles Streets remains open.

Haldeman says Nixon behind Watergate break in

Former White House aide H R Haldeman says in his new book that Nixon caused the Watergate burglars to break into the Democratic Party offices and tried to erase a vital tape recording. He states Nixon sought to target Lawrence O'Brien and discussed "getting the goods" on him. Haldeman is in prison for Watergate crimes.

Leon Spinks Upsets Ali For Heavyweight Title

Leon Spinks, a 24 year old ex Marine and Olympic gold medalist, stunned Muhammad Ali by a 15 round decision at the Las Vegas Hilton to win the heavyweight title. Ali admitted Spinks surprised him and others as he praised the young challenger while Spinks called the victory a second goal after Olympic glory.

Firemen Protest Cuts in Ridley Township Fire Budget

Fire companies in Ridley Township protested a $17,875 cut and the deletion of a $20,000 rescue truck from the amended 1978 fire fund budget. The plan reduces each company’s allocation to $8,150 while Milmont Leedom and Vauclain receive $750 extra for ambulance service. The budget totals $85,025 at 1.5 mills, down from 2 mills. Fire officials warned taxpayers of the impact, while commissioners defended the change and eyed state or federal funds for the rescue vehicle.
