Rescued 24 From Charny As Atlantic Storm Rages
Twenty four people were saved from two lifeboats and a life raft by a rescue vessel after abandoning the list ing freighter Charny about 55 miles off Cape Hatteras. The Vinni rescued the eight aboard the Charny and its crew of 22 plus two passengers in good condition. The Absecon was en route as eight foot seas and high winds persisted. Flare drops aided the rescue and next steps were unclear. Separately, the Pegasus towed by a tug faced hull cracks and an oil leak as it drifted offshore.
