A Penn State psychology professor reports night myopia worsens in darkness and that custom glasses improved 206 students’ night driving. He notes the condition varies by person and recommends specialized glasses for night driving, flying, or working in dim light.
In Harrisburg two Delaware County Democrats broke ranks to back a resolution calling for Speaker Herbert Fineman to step down. The measure failed 109 to 86 after party caucuses, with Fineman remaining in the post despite an indictment alleging extortion bribery and conspiracy. Rep. Thomas Stapleton Jr. and Rep. Peter O Keefe supported the resolution, citing clouded innocence and the need to keep government seen as fair.
Philadelphia authorities reach a settlement in a 1971 class action requiring single occupancy cells in all three city jails. The agreement, signed Monday, could free up to 950 prisoners and must be in effect by July 1.

A panel of medical and scientific experts urged Health, Education and Welfare Secretary Joseph A. Califano Jr. to lift the nationwide moratorium on fin vaccinations and to revive limited and voluntary inoculation programs. Califano planned to announce his decision today.
Harrisburg AP reports the Governor's Justice Commission refused funding for the grand jury investigation into alleged patient abuse at Farview State Hospital. Executive director Thomas Brennan said the matter should be funded by the legislature rather than the commission.
John A. Phillips, a 21 year old Princeton student from New Haven, said two foreign governments the Pakistani and French embassies in Washington asked him for information from his blueprint for an atomic bomb. He refused both requests.
