Federal investigators fault a defective cargo tank on a tractor trailer carrying liquid propane gas for a July blast near Berlin New York that killed ten people and destroyed homes and a church. The ICC division urged registration of similar tanks and record keeping on ownership and repairs. The truck owned by E Brooke Matlack Inc of Philadelphia was en route from Philadelphia to Bennington Vermont when the crash occurred on a Rensselaer County highway.
Washington AP report notes senators backing antifilibuster rules failed to secure a two thirds vote to curb filibuster limits. The three fifths plan gained some support but fell 10 votes short as Southern senators blocked action ending the rules fight after nearly four weeks. Senate adjourned as leaders prepared to renew the battle next Congress.
Ottawa reports point to a potential decisive election on April 8 as Social Credit and New Democratic gains threaten major party majorities. The 1958 landslide and subsequent minority governments are recalled as Lester Pearson and John Diefenbaker vie to solidify their leaderships amid evolving party dynamics.
SMITHTON PA AP The town of 600 faced a devastating Thursday blaze that wiped out the fire house and a large truck, with equipment losses around 125000. Fire Chief Emile Powley said the crew saved a small truck and two outsiders joined the effort as two firefighters suffered smoke inhalation. The department plans to appeal for public support to rebuild.
In Baltimore AP report engineers at Martin Co use thick cigar smoke from oil soaked cigars to trace beams of light for an optical system simulating space in a vacuum chamber. Raymond Haney and Charles Schell Jr run tests converting a carbon arc light into a sun like beam, with cigar smoke carried through aluminum tubing to reveal light paths on spacecraft model coatings.
In Toronto's West End a blaze killed eight children aged 4 to 16 in a two story brick shell row. Roy French, 36, said a kettle overheated and exploded after he slept and left it on. Neighbors aided, Mrs French hospitalized, father treated for a foot cut as firefighters contained the flames. The fire damaged two adjacent homes and another was damaged.
AFL-CIO Building Service Local 399 threatened to strike against the SPCA LA for refusing to bargain. The union says 21 of 27 kennel men and ambulance drivers signed cards seeking representation, but SPCA says it has nothing to bargain with. The SPCA, a nonprofit charity, relies on donations and serves 18 cities in the Los Angeles area.
Attorneys prepare for a rare criminal contempt hearing at the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans. Governor Barnett and Lt. Gov. Johnson, twice convicted of civil contempt for blocking James Meredith's admission to the University of Mississippi, seek to avoid criminal penalties. The court previously jailed them and fined them daily until purge, while asking the Justice Department to bring criminal charges.
Saigon area report says 1st Lt. James B. Johnson, 28, of Winter Haven Florida, survived a B26 crash and was safely found. Maj. James R. ONeill, 40, of Huntington Station New York, died in the crash. Vietnamese air force observer also parachuted and survived. Johnson and ONeill were involved in incendiary bombing missions against Viet Cong targets. second B26 crash in South Vietnam in a week with two Americans killed in the prior incident.
AP dispatch reports State school superintendent Charles H. Boehm called an emergency session of the state Council of Education to consider Gov. Scranton’s request for a temporary suspension of compulsory school reorganization. Scranton urged delay to allow the legislature time to act on the administration’s reform plan to be presented next week. The council’s next scheduled meeting is March 12, with Scranton arguing against continuing full implementation amid legislative debates.
