Civil unrest erupts across Northern Ireland following a shootout that killed a British soldier and two Irish men linked to the IRA. Gunfire, bombs, and riots spread through Belfast and surrounding towns as police and troops confront rising violence.
Police search for a dark panalexioned man after George W. Beck, 51, a Revlon vice president, and his wife Ina Tol Johnson Beck, 21, are found slain on a bloodstained catamaran in a Fort Lauderdale area marina. Robbery ruled out. investigators note no sign of struggle and valuables left behind. The couple had honeymooned on the yacht after a Christmas Day marriage in Birmingham. The marine mechanic described a man watching the vessel before fleeing. a hearing on a wage policy case is set for Thursday.
Trustees propose $30 million to cover retroactive salaries last fall while $20 million would fund payrolls and retirement taxes, all within the railroad’s court supervised reorganization overseen by Fuljam since last June under federal bankruptcy laws.
The government asked the 6th Circuit to overturn Judge Damon J. Keith’s ruling that wiretap logs in the Lawrence R. Plamondon case are to be disclosed. Christine Keeler aged 28, famed for the Profumo scandal, plans to marry businessman Anthony Platt in London. The announcement recalls Profumo’s 1963 resignation after admitting an affair with Miss Keeler during the same period as Soviet attache Eugene Ivanov.

Bertram Greenberg of West Covina Calif. killed two people in a multi state rampage before being shot and killed by Grants New Mexico officers on Interstate 40. James Brown 24 of Springfield Mo. and Officer Jim Keeton of Holbrook Ariz. died. Brown's wife Karen 23 wounded and Patrolman Dan Beckstead seriously hurt. Greenberg, a former mental patient, reportedly drove a damaged car west of Gallup and forced a ride before attacking the Browns wife, then was killed as officers fired.
