Sun denies defect in gas cavern at Marcus Hook

At a Friday press conference borough officials and Sun Co. refinery manager James Plyler stated all homes on Green Street 1100 block were gas-free at noon but return timing remains uncertain. Five homes damaged and over 40 families evacuated after a gas leak ignited last Saturday. Officials linked the leak to an instrument overload in an underground cavern, with two mistakes blamed for the pressure spike and incorrect inventory readings. No injuries were reported. Residents on the 1000 block have begun returning home while 1100 block residents remain sheltered at Sun’s expense. Mayor Curt Weldon said Sun’s negligence is admitted but urged independent verification and considered closing the cavern if safety cannot be guaranteed. A briefing with state and federal agencies followed.
