Santa Fe Railway Super Chief derailed in Kansas City yards injuring 37 and blocking two main tracks. About 250 to 300 passengers on 14-car train bound for Los Angeles were affected. eight passenger coaches and two baggage cars left the rails. Most hospitalized passengers were not seriously hurt.
Hundreds of eighth graders at Brooklyn's J S 58 protested for better cafeteria food more freedom and more dances gathering outside and then into the auditorium led by principal Miss Mary A McCassey. They clashed with staff spilled into corridors prompting six patrolmen to intervene. Miss McCassey promised cafeteria improvements and more dances after meeting with students.
Residents of Charles Town express anger over a Sunday racing bill passed by the State Senate and pending in the House. The small community of about 4000 values Sabbath observance while track owners back the measure. Charles Town hosts two of West Virginia’s four horse tracks with year round permit status.
Chief Magistrate John P. Walsh fined 18 scofflaws a total of 4803 and jailed one motorist for ignoring a summons. He warned that illegal parking in mid town Philadelphia must end and emphasized the seriousness of failing to answer court summons.

Meanwhile Fort McClellan, Alabama, reports a Pennsylvania soldier dying of spinal meningitis at the fort. a second GI is seriously injured as new walls are added outside the existing fort structure. Pvt John Kelly Jr., 19, Abington, Pa, is named in the fatal case.
The nation’s soft coal production halted as the largest strike in 17 years spreads from Pennsylvania to six states, idling an estimated 84,500 miners. Railways report sharply reduced tonnage while steel firms and utilities say they lack immediate concern.
Press Silent MOSCOW AP reports the Soviet press offered no comment on the protest by the Soviet Union over the collision between a Russian merchant ship and the U S destroyer Rowan in the Sea of Japan on Wednesday.
Harrisburg AP reports Pennsylvania December employment reached a record 4,705,100, up 24,900 from November. The gain, twice the seasonal expectation, signals retail hires for the pre Christmas period and a rise in factory employment with a smaller decline in construction. Unemployment claims fell last week.
About 2,500 workers at the Wilmington assembly plant will return to work as GM announces reopening plans after a parts shortage caused by strikes. The facility builds Buicks and Chevrolets and had closed last Tuesday.
