Vitamin E Helps Fight Premature Blindness
Boston researchers report high doses of vitamin E given within 24 hours of birth may prevent retrolental fibroplasia related blindness in premies. The study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, cites RLF affecting about 1,500 U.S. children annually and leaving 500 blind.

Vitamin E in high doses cut blindness in preterm infants
Baylor College of Medicine and University of Texas researchers studied 50 premature infants given high dose oral vitamin E within 24 hours of birth and daily for eight weeks. It reduced milder forms of retrolental fibroplasia but did not lower overall disease incidence. about 65 percent of high dose and 51 percent of low dose groups showed mild forms, while blindness was lessened when combined with surgery. RLF arises from oxygen exposure in incubators in underdeveloped lungs.
