Kean Declared NJ Governor After Tight Recount
Democratic Rep James Florio conceded defeat to Republican Thomas Kean in New Jersey's tight gubernatorial race, ending a statewide recount that had halted in three counties and left Bergen still counting absentee ballots. Kean held a 1677 vote lead before the recount and gained 140 additional votes during tallying. Florio said the concession was in the state’s best interests and that the recount would wrap up soon for official certification by the Board of Canvassers.
