Prisoners murdered and beaten as prison chaos grips Florence

In Florence Arizona the state prison faced a semi siege after inmate Waymond Small 32 was beaten with a hammer and stabbed in a license plate factory. Two more inmates David Verdugo 24 and Walter Lee Souders 20 were stabbed in workshops and kitchen. The warden called it a gang hit amid white supremacist and Mexican gang violence. Governor Bolin dismissed Corrections Director Moran and sought help from Texas while the prison operates under a federal order to reduce population from 2100 to 1750 by year end.

President's nephew a convicted robber in prison

William Carter Spann, 30, nephew of President Carter, is serving a 10 year to life sentence for two bar robberies last year at Soledad Prison. He wrote to the San Rafael Independent Journal recalling a Christmas memory with his grandmother and guitar, and reflecting on his uncle's election win.
