George Lynch traveled from Philadelphia to Mount Lawn Cemetery for the Friday dedication of Bessie Smith’s grave marker. The 71 year old recalled her as the greatest blues singer, and the stone funded by Janis Joplin and NAACP leader Juanita Green drew about 50 admirers. Lynch’s arrival surprised old friends including accompanist John Brown, who shared stories of their years with Smith before Lynch left the gathering early.
