Youth Conservation Corps May End With Federal Cuts
Federal budget cuts threaten 1981 as the last year of the Youth Conservation Corps at Tinicum National Environmental Center. For seven years 15 to 18 year olds worked in four to eight week sessions, earning minimum wage and two hours of related education to foster an environmental ethic and job readiness. Farber stresses character over specific skills, noting employers value reliability and a positive work attitude. The program demonstrates success through numerous completed projects, though some tasks remain understated due to restrictions on power tools.
