General Motors reported record first quarter earnings of 536 million dollars, 1.87 a share, on 4.786 billion dollars in sales. Domestic car and truck sales topped 1.36 million and worldwide output reached 1.77 million units.
At a Japanese Embassy reception in Moscow, U.S. Ambassador Foy Kohler and Soviet First Deputy Premier Anastas Mikoyan debated American recon flights over Cuba. Kohler defended U.S. rights, citing Castro’s rejection of on site inspection in 1962.

In Rye Cove, volunteers insulated walls, ceilings, and painted, with local help taking over as work finishes.
The Air Force says it has investigated over 8000 unidentified flying objects in 16 years and found no evidence of threat to U.S. security. Since 1947 most cases remain unexplained, with 15 still unidentified last year including objects described as an ear of corn and a banana near Van dalia Ohio.
