War protesters rally as Capitol echoes antiwar push

In Washington supporters of peace rallied outside the Capitol in a massive antiwar show. Police estimated up to 200000 protesters while organizers claimed half a million. The event aimed to pressure Congress to end the war and seek broader welfare measures.

Weapons dump wrecked by Reds

A weekend of fires across Seattle Ohio St Paul Boston and New York City killed at least 29 people including 13 children and teens. In Seattle elderly tenants leapt from windows to escape as a fire trapped many. A separate AP report details Viet Cong mortar and bomb attacks near Saigon and in the Mekong delta, with heavy losses on both sides and significant U.S. casualties and equipment losses.

Hanoi cites US protests as antiwar fury grows

North Vietnam claimed weekend antiwar demonstrations showed a great storm of American fury overwhelming the bellicose Nixon clique. The Hanoi newspaper Nha Dan editorial cited Pentagon tens or a thousand Americans in its account.

Docked with station Salute Soviet cosmonauts end space mission

Col. Vladimir Shatalov, Soyuz 10 commander, said the two day space mission with crewmates was completely satisfactory. The three cosmonauts landed safely aboard the Soyuz landing module after testing a new docking collar and other equipment for orbital space station work.

Byrd proposes 17 million for family planning and research

Senator Byrd urges a total of 17 million dollars for family planning and population research in 1971 to aid about 5 million women unable to afford services. The plan requests funding in a letter to Senator Magnuson, targeting health and welfare appropriations.

Trains Delayed After Philadelphia Wreck

A collision between an empty 18 car passenger train and a freight locomotive near Holmesburg Junction north of Philadelphia delayed Sunday trains between Philadelphia and New York. One Washington to Boston passenger train was delayed seven hours after leaving Washington at 10 15 pm Saturday, carrying extra cars for peace demonstrators, arriving Boston at 3 30 pm Sunday. Four workmen were injured, none seriously, as the locomotive and 34 passenger cars tipped, power lines fell, and small fires started.

Death at gas station ends Washington peace demo linked overdose

Vietnam veteran David Francis Kieran, 21, died of a drug overdose after a car trip to a Washington demonstration. Police charged Frank Pierorazio, 36, with murder in Kieran's death. Prosecutors said Kieran received a $25 cocaine bag from a 16 year old girl in the car, and an accomplice allegedly helped procure drugs for the trip.
