In Houston the family of a woman slain last year sues Lions Eye Bank of Houston claiming medical staff replaced her eyes with plastic discs before burial. The suit alleges negligent handling and seeks unspecified damages, citing a pattern of improper eye removal practices. The case raises questions about consent and standard protocols in postmortem eye banks.
President Clinton urged spending to fix staffing shortages he called the main cause of neglect in nursing homes. In his weekly radio address he argued older Americans deserve respect, not neglect, for their lifelong work.
New district superintendent Dr. Joseph Guzman Lopez chairs the Del Rio board meeting at 7 p.m. at the district offices. The Tommy Lynn Sells trial continues Monday at 9 a.m. in Val Verde County Judicial Center with jury read the charge by Judge George Thurmond followed by deliberations on guilt. Dr. Cynthia Beamer testified about Krystal Surles injuries and the attempt on Kaylene Harris, noting the fatal wound near the windpipe and carotid sheath.
Del Rio hosts the Taste of Home Cooking School at the Civic Center on Tuesday with doors at 5 30 pm and program starting 7 pm. Sponsor Del Rio News Herald promises prizes gifts and cookery demonstrations by Margaret McCutcheon from Greendale Wisconsin and local merchants provide door prizes and coupons. Tickets are 5 or 4 with a non perishable food item donation and must be bought in advance.
Jean Barkley of Weimer Texas topped 15 entries to win the Del Rio Elks Lodge chili cookoff earning enough points to qualify for the world championship chili cook off in Terlingua at Big Bend National Park in November.
On Wednesday Oct 4 about 3 000 students and parents from Cardwell Head Start Buena Vista Ruben Chavira East Side Dr Lonnie Green Lamar Elementary and San Felipe Middle join county leaders for a walk to celebrate National Walk Our Children to School Day. The event promotes pedestrian safety with partners Partnership for a Walkable America and local officials. Community leaders and safety groups will walk with students and parents and two proclamations are planned.
