Trials Tuesday for 17 defendants in Del Rio court
The second of two Val Verde Park Estates men accused of extortion faces trial Tuesday in 63rd Judicial District Court. Allen South, 23, is charged with aggravated assault and theft tied to a butane tank theft and related burglaries. Sixteen other defendants also are slated for trial, with cases including burglary, auto burglary, theft, vandalism, and forged check charges. Several victims and addresses are listed alongside dates from February to April.

A Del Rio man reports an electrical short started a blaze under the van dash late Saturday in the Del Rio National Bank lot at Main Street and Garfield. Three Del Rio firefighters extinguished the fire, damaging wiring and an eight track tape player. exact loss not yet estimated. Firefighters returned to station about 11:35 a.m.

Ingram Man Killed in Saturday Wreck Near Rocksprings
An Ingram man, Jerry R. Smith, 24, was killed when his northbound car struck a bridge on U.S. Highway 377 about 9.7 miles south of Rocksprings around 3 a.m. He was thrown from the vehicle and pronounced dead about seven hours later. Passenger Larry Wayne Black, 25, was treated for cuts and scratches and listed in good condition. Smith’s body was later moved to Nelson Funeral Home. DPS Trooper Michael Gulledge investigated.

Del Rio Rams defeated Lake View Chiefs 18 to 7 while the San Felipe Del Rio Consolidated ISD reported $200 in end zone markers stolen from the football field. Roy Musquiz said eight orange end zone markers disappeared between Thursday and 8 am Friday, with two tires later found nearby. Police also investigated other city thefts, including hubcaps taken from a car in the Del Rio Bank and Trust parking lot. Losses totaled about $300.
