Del Rio Teen Wins State Fair Music Contest
Yesenia Mendiacal of Del Rio, an 18-year-old high school graduate, placed first in the La Fuente State Fair of Texas Music Contest finals after advancing from semi finals in Dallas. She sang Huapango Torero and Popurri de Huapango, La Cigarra and Cucurrucucu, delivering a 4 1/2 minute performance to win in a field of ten finalists.

Glenn to become oldest astronaut with Discovery launch
John Glenn, aged 77, set to launch aboard space shuttle Discovery from Cape Canaveral with six crewmates on a nine day mission. The countdown moved smoothly for a 2 p.m. EST liftoff as 600000 gallons of propellant prepared the shuttle while a crowd including President Clinton and Congress members planned to watch. Glenn serves as Payload Specialist 2 on the mission, which marks his return to space 36 years after his 1962 orbital flight. Other crew members include Curtis L. Brown, Stephen W. Lindsey, Steven K. Robinson, Scott E Parazynski, Pedro Duque and Chiaki Mukai.

Domestic violence awareness walk and vigil Friday
