Raymond Wilkins received a University of Alabama varsity track letter on his 87th birthday for a career interrupted by World War II. He began as a freshman high jumper in 1940 but returned after five years to find he could not compete, making the ceremony a surprise at a church service.

Special to the News Herald Veterans Day events begin with a 10 a.m. parade at Star Park on North Main Street in Del Rio. Participation is free. contact Ret. Master Sgt. A remembrance program follows at 11 a.m. at the Del Rio Civic Center, outside the veteran monument, presented by veterans groups from Del Rio, Val Verde County and Laughlin AFB. The monument lists eight World War I, 67 World War II, two Korea, 14 Vietnam, one Afghanistan and one Iraq veterans. A fly-by from Laughlin pilots will cap the ceremony. A full program will be printed later.
A Saturday showing at 1:30 p.m. at 309 South Main Street Del Rio showcases seven surviving Cuban Missile Crisis pilots recounting their 13 days. Viewers will learn which U 2s were used and launch locations with new details and crisis photos. Admission is free with donations encouraged to support the museum.
