Firefighters battle blazes in Del Rio moving van fire
Del Rio firefighters battled a moving van fire at Benkins Van Lines 100 Jasper St. The blaze re lit 10 minutes after an initial engulfment drawing 22 more firefighters for 50 minutes. The truck, trailer, and crates were damaged with undetermined cause and no injuries reported. In a separate incident at Las Vacas Street a two car crash injured Raquel Gonzalez 403 W Bean St. She received on scene first aid and was hospitalized at Val Verde Memorial Hospital.

Knights of Columbus Honored with Special Centennial Plaque
The San Felipe Council 2687 received the Special Centennial First Degree Plaque from Supreme Knight Birgit Dechant during Columbus Day events on Oct 10. Grand Knight Santiago Ruiz Jr. and First Degree Team Captain Santiago T. Gonzalez accepted as District Deputy Herbert Dirksen attended. The celebration included a Corporate Communion Mass, a dinner at Embers Steak House, and an initiation honoring Rev. John McGrath. Twelve new members joined, including four from Uvalde, three from Eagle Pass, five from Del Rio. Centennial medallions were awarded to Ed Quinlan, Wilson Tyler, and Juan Mauricio Jr., with Quinlan named Knight of the Quarter. Lourdes Martinez was crowned KC queen, aided by Ron Wessel, with Jorge Martinez organizing refreshments.

Grand jury in Val Verde returns lone indictment
The Val Verde County Grand Jury met for a brief session Friday and returned a single sealed indictment in a hot checks case. Bill Barnes, criminal investigator for the DA’s office, said several cases were passed or no billed and others remain under investigation in what he called a light docket.

Police logged multiple incidents including a $120 theft from a Wendy’s safe on Ave F between 2 and 9 am Monday attributed to Margarito Terrones who was later arrested for criminal mischief. A tire slash was reported on Rowland Drive, a purse theft at Holiday Inn on Ave F, and a car window shattered on 10th Street. Damaged coin boxes at Park Plaza Car Wash caused about $125 in losses.
