Hutto, a Pro Rodeo Cowboys Association member, will compete in tie-down and team roping at Dale Gas 2004 on October 22 and 23 at Val Verde County Fair grounds. He has earned more than $250,000 on the pro rodeo tour.
Val Verde County Sheriff A O Jernigan and Deputy Vicente Rodriguez announce a 2500 dollar donation from Wal Mart SuperCenter Del Rio to start a county K-9 narcotics unit. Rodriguez pushed the project, noting border proximity and community safety benefits while seeking broader agency support.
Kansas City based Cerner and Corter Corp announce a $25 million 10 year program to create personal health records for Type I diabetes patients. The Web based system will track glucose, carbs and insulin, accessible to families and clinicians to reduce visits and preempt problems. The plan aligns with national goals for computerized health records to improve care and cut costs.
San Felipe Del Rio Consolidated Independent School District outlines a new immunization program for students not covered by existing vaccines. A $5 admin fee will apply. vaccinations require parental consent and are aimed at students unable to obtain shots privately. The plan, with nurse training on Oct 26, seeks board review before final approval and may run at one location or each school by November.
Del Rio City Council approved a one year contract with option to renew for the Chamber of Commerce Tourism and Convention Department after months of dispute over hotel tax funds and building improvements. Council members debated funding and downtown promotion before voting 5 to 2.
The 4th Annual Val Verde County Archeology Fair will run Saturday at Whitehead Memorial Museum from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is 2 dollars for adults and 1 dollar for children. Amistad National Recreation Area Whitehead Memorial Museum and Shumla School sponsor. Activities include rock art atlatl spear throwing stories in a tipi grinding corn adobe bricks pottery frontier life and flintknapping demonstrations. Scheduled talks include 10 45 a.m. slide program by Joe Labadie 11 15 a.m. war diary of Lt French by Bill Haenn and a noon Kiowa Lee history feature.
