Salary problems plague District Clerk's office
District Clerk Dixie Connolly said she sought permission to raise deputy salaries but was denied by the Val Verde County Commissioners' Court in a closed session. She cited staff losses and a depleted pay scale as harming the handling of 20 drug cases, a murder, and robberies, appealing for a one-step increase for her assistants with backing from the Val Verde County Bar Association. The court's budget notes included scrapping the racetrack manager position, a decision then amended to retain a track role under a different plan.

Bilingual education policy sparks dispute over percentile cutoffs
Gomez denies exclusion aims while Truan charges district transfers at or below the 23rd percentile undermine bilingual programs. He cites the Legislature's intent for a 40th percentile cutoff, noting the 23rd percentile risks pushing children from English language instruction. The law allows transfers after scoring at the 40th percentile on English tests.
